whole hop question

I just received my share of leaf hops from a group buy that our club did. I have never used whole leaf hops so I have a seemingly stupid question. Basically, how do you use them?

Do you just throw them in? Or do you crush them up before throwing them in the kettle?

I just throw them in. Some put them in a muslin bag so they're easier to get rid of before you throw the beer into the primary.

I have seen people break hop plugs up, but not whole hops.

Cool. Thanks. I was just curious what technique people use. I have always used pellets, but decided to give whole ones a try.

You won't get as high of utilization for bittering. You may need slightly more hops.
