if not those hops. any hops.

where do you guys like to buy your bulk hops from. i started to make much hoppier beers and am curious where you buy your bulk hops. with at least 6 to 10 oz of hops in some of these ipas i realized i have to buy bulk.

yakima hops direct or the big guys?

what about older crop years are they ok still or do you risk getting a stale batch ?

anyone offer a flat shipping rate for hop shipments.

thanks

Yakima valley hops for some, certain hops I use a lot of.. like a lot, I mean I'll buy the 11lb bags of, I use hophavoc.com but I do 15 gallon batches and neipas will take a few lbs of hops per batch.. I vacuum seal and freeze in 1lb quantities. I've bought previous crop years, it probably varies from hop to hop, but I won't do that again.

Edit: at hophavoc this gets me citra at under $1 per ounce and nectaron under $1.5 per ounce, including shipping cost.

Also my lhbs carries or can get 1lb bags of certain hops and I'll get what I can from them.

is hop havoc minimum 11 lbs i cant seem to find a 1 lb option.

I prefer HopsDirect, and I don't shy away from slightly older hops. I just finished a pack of 2019 Cascade that were still as bright smelling as any I'd hope to get.

Including a pound each of Citra and Simcoe as my budget breakers, I've just gotten 8.5 lbs delivered for <$85. If you can use a commercial address for deliveries, that usually cuts the shipping rates dramatically.

I strongly recommend deep freeze storage, and vacuum packing once opened.

I order bulk hops direct from YVH, usually when they have prior year clearance sales. Store them vacuum sealed in the freezer. You can get mylar vacuum bags if you're paranoid about oxygen.

I like YVH a lot. I especially appreciate that their 2 oz price is reasonable compared to the 1/2 and 1-pound prices, so I can get a few smaller bags, use some, and still have most of it vacuum-packed. Crop years are always disclosed up front. The LUPOMAX selection is good, and it's a great product. And they ship fast.

I've used Northwest Hop Farms for a few years, usually when I want something unusual that I can't get anywhere else. For me, shipping from Canada always takes longer, but other than that obvious difference, I've never had a bad experience with them. Packaging and general logistics also seem to have really improved with the new owners coming in.

Farmhouse is another good source for hard-to-find hops.

I've ordered from probably at least half a dozen other places online, but honestly, unless you're weird like me and get obsessed with a particular unusual hop, those three should really keep you covered. (Speaking of which, does anyone have any idea where I could buy some Sybilla, without ordering 5 kg direct from Poland?)

Older crop years ... obviously it depends on how they've been stored, but I've never had a problem. The oldest I've gone is 5 years -- I bought 2018 Vojvodina from Northwest in 2023 -- and it was still good.

Yakima Valley for most of mine. As far as older crops, like Agent said, a deep freezer and vacuum sealer is your best friend. As long as the hops still smell good, you should be ok. If they smell like Parmesan cheese, toss them.

I have used YVH and Hops Direct. I prefer the packaging and apparent freshness from YVH. Their zip top bags make storage a breeze.
I have found that the sweet spot for shipping from them is buying 3-4 pounds at a time. Price for shipping 3-4 pounds is nearly the same as 1 pound so it brings down the overall price per ounce.

Next order I will try YVH since I haven't tried them. I always order at several pounds so shipping sounds good.

My latest order from Hop Alliance was four pounds and shipping was around $12.

YVH for me mostly, too.

It’s worth checking the difference in price for the 2oz vs 16oz bags. Sometimes the difference is < $2.00 and then you don’t have to repackage the larger bag.

Yakima. Bulk hops is one thing I don't buy from my LHBS. They're significantly more economical provided you buy enough that the shipping makes sense.
And, there's a military (and I assume others) discount through GovX.

I have used Brewhardware and YVM for the last year. Compared to most, I am a mild hop addition guy. For me, a 50 in bitterness is about as high as I go

There's a great sale at YVH now on previous year hops.

The 2023 Citra a deal and, in my experience, much better than the 2024 crop.
thanks for this with shipping a pound of 2023 citra came to 22$ . this sounds very reasonable to me,.

Another bump for YVH.
I placed an order Monday night. I couldn’t pass up on the crop year close out. Two lbs 2023 Citra and one lb 2021 German Saaz. Three pounds with shipping for just $36.75.
Anyhow, I got an email confirmation of my order being processed on Tuesday morning and the tracking said it should arrive Thursday by 8pm. They arrived this afternoon!

I also placed an order for two pounds of the '23 Citra Monday afternoon and they arrived around noon today, coast to coast in under 48 hours. That's actually fairly typical of the YVH -> FedEx -> me connection as long as there isn't a weekend in the way...

Cheers!

just a follow up. the hops arrived from yvh in 2 days . i was concerned about the age of the citra but when i repacked it into 2 ounce vaccuum seal bags it smells intensely citrusy and very fresh no onion garlic or cheese at all. 👍
