I'm pretty fond of high gravity beers and stouts . I am using starters made of Wyeast Irish Ale Activator White labs Irish ale yeast and DME for an Imperial Stout . Is this the best strain to use or should I seek something suited for barleywine?

Do you have more information on the beer you making, e.g. style, expected OG, etc?

If you are looking to make a dry beer with an ABV content of more than 8% you might want to consider pitching high gravity yeast. Also, using DME makes it easy to add the fermentables in steps. You can add half when you like pitch and another half after a day or two. My book has details.
