Hi, wondering what wyeast to substitute vss 1737 (This was the flying Dog yeast they released way back when).

I am doing a simple 2 row / crystal 90 with northernbrewer hops/cascasde aroma/dry hops and found this is very very close to their doggie style beer.

Thanks

I would think a clean, American style ale yeast would be the ticket. So Wyeast's American Ale strain woujld be one option.

I've been curious about this yeast for a while as I live about an hour from their brewery (which has one of the best tours I've been on so far). This is what Flying Dog said about the yeast when it was last released:

"This ale yeast is a vigorous fermentor, producing ales with a complex, malty profile. This yeast will give an attenuation of approximately 68% to 71%, has good flocculation, and ferments in the 65F to 72F temperature range."

https://flyingdogbreweryinfo.wordpress.com/2007/01/11/flying-dog-vss-home-brewer-recipe/

They also include the recipe for their pale ale in there which shows 73% attenuation. I know they are praising their own yeast, but they do make it sound pretty nice. I'm sure regular American ale yeast would do well, but a good alternative more in line with this description would be nice to have as well.

A little off-topic, I did while on the tour that for some of their lighter beers (such as Dead Rise) they use what was labeled as 'German Ale' yeast.

hmmm, think I am going to try it with some different strains then. be curious to see how major the difference is.

Thanks Pappers, going to start with the american ale wyeast option first...
