so i keep reading about these things and im not seeing what they could be used for. Can anyone explain?

Practical example, a washing machine has two solenoid valves to control the water lines.

i did look at the concept i just dont understand the aplication with brewing. and i did peek at wikipedia before hand. I just cant see how someone uses this for homebrew applications

You can use one on a kegerator to control flow to a tap (for security, or coolness), but they are also used to on/off flow during brewing process. Normally a homebrewer would not really need one unless they are getting WAY too advanced for their own good. I would say anyone using one for homebrewing might need some consultaton.
