What is recycle number 7?

I'm making a batch of Edwort's Apfelwine. Since I don't have a fermenter free, I decided to ferment it in the jugs that the juice came in, just by dumping out a little juice and adding the sugar and yeast. I thought the jugs were PET, but I looked at the recycle number on an extra bottle I bought for unfermented drinking and it says "7" on the bottom. Is this going to be a problem for the ~6 week fermentation of apfelwine?

7 is the catch all recycler number. It means that the types of plastics in the bottle don't really fall under any other standard recycler code and it could be comprised of many different compounds. If possible try to avoid it because you wont know what is in the plastic; though many people use plastics that fall in this category for brewing. Cooler mash tuns (that are food and water safe) are usually comprised of several different plastics and fall under #7 recycler codes, for example.

Id say, rdwhahb. You'll be fine, but try to avoid it in the future.

I don't ferment in them but, I do save the jugs to store the finished product in. Although, I really like the stuff and can go through five gallons of it pretty quick. :cross:

I can tell you the smaller 1/2 gallons jugs that Tree Top comes in, assuming that's the juice you are using are stamped #2. Doesn't help this time I know.
