I don't mean that literally; I know what cold break is, but I've done two AGs now, and I haven't seen it. When I am done boiling, I bring my pot inside and get my wort chiller going, and 15 minutes later, it's cool. I then pour the entire contents of the brew pot into the primary, shake it, and pitch. Is there a chance that the cold break material is in the bottom of the brew pot and I'm just not seeing it?

Well t'll either stay in the kettle if your lucky, maybe in your strainer or it will end up in your fermenter. It's the stuff that forms the main part of the intitial trub along with hop particles and the bits of twigs and leaves that fall into your brew if you brew outside.:)

You are pouring the cold break into your carboy. When you use a kettle fining like whirlfloc and let everything settle for 20-30 minutes after you chill, you will have a very clear wort coming out of the kettle. I formulate my recipes for 6 gallons so I can get 5 clear gallons in the fermenter and leave behind the remaining gallon of cold break and hop trub.

Ok, next question: are my two AG batches going to taste like ass because I failed to separate this stuff?

god i love this board! i was wondering is it a good i dea to whirl pool in a keggel with a home made hop stopper installed? i am brewing 2 AG batches this weekend and would love to employ the 'whirlpool' method.

thanks HBT!

Just don't get it confused with the windmill method.

If you've got a hopstopper, don't worry about it. You'll be siphoning from the middle of where the whirlpooled junk would be anyway.

If it gets in to your primary, RDWHAHB.

I use a CFC, and the cold break forms on the way from the kettle to the fermenter. I would have to go to extra lengths to get it out - and I don't.
