I am a new brewer with 2 extract brews under my belt so far, and I feel a yeast starter would be a good way to step up my game. The only thing is, I think I can save money on buying a 2000ml erlenmeyer flask and use something else like... I dunno, a wine bottle? Maybe a gallon glass jug? Maybe even a big mason jar?

What do you use OTHER THAN an erlenmeyer flask for your yeast starter??

I use an old gallon cider jug on the rare occasions I make a starter these days.

Growler from a local brewery. It's free when you buy the beer inside.

I use an Erlenmeyer flask because of the flat bottom and the ability to use a stir plate efficiently. Anything will work really as long as it's big enough for your starter sizes and some people successfully use mason jars with stir plates but it's a bit more difficult.

I start with a 1000ml flask, but step it up to either a 1/2gal or 1gal jug.

The jugs are cheap and easy, the only reason I use a flask to start is the flat bottom.

Mason jars and for bigger starters one gallon glass jugs.

You guys are great, all of these are great suggestions!

I've seen a lot of clear glass vases that I think would make good starters, but I worry about the quality of glass with something like that... They usually don't seem fantastic.

I use a 1G growler for big starters, and a 2qt mason jar for smaller ones. Saving up for a 2L flask right now.

I just wanted to say that I scored a half gallon jar today that I'm going to use for a yeast starter in my next brew... Northern Brewer's Oatmeal Stoat partial mash kit... My first time trying partial mash, wish me luck!

edit: I also want to ask, do you think I will be okay covering the mouth with foil or should I rig up an air lock?

Foil is better, you want the gas exchange so that oxygen can get in and CO2 out.
