I am trying to find a better way for my batch sparging and wanted to know what others use. You may have 5 gallons of sparge water and and want to go 2 x 2.5 etc. Right now I use a larger Pyrex cup that holds 1 gallon so I have to do 3 pours for every 1 time I pour and winds up being 6 pours total for my batch sparge. As anyone found any good vessel for batch sparging when you split your sparge in half?

Or do you mostly just add some water in until you can pickup the pot and dump it all in.
I have been 2 sparges with vorlauf each time.

thanks

So you are just doing a single batch sparge it would appear. I usually half it and do two. So I think I can go 2 to 2.5 pyrex pours for the first sparge and then just pour the pot for the 2nd sparge. Yes, the gloves help I have some great ones that are heat resistant to well up over 500 degrees

I just pick up the pot and pour. Welding gloves are handy.

I open the valve on my HLT and watch the sight glass until the desired volume has poured into the mash tun.

YMMV.

I use a pot to transfer water into the mash until it gets light enough to pick up and pour. I add enough water until it's an inch or two above the grain for a batch. I usually end up doing 2-4 batches and whatever runnings are above my boil volume gets boiled down to 1.030 in a separate kettle and then frozen for future starters.

I have a calibrated dip stick (metal ruler) for my pot and only heat what I need to sparge with. Then I just dump the whole thing into my MLT (set my cooler on the floor and pour pot by hand), stir, rest, vorlauf, drain, boil.

I just measure half of my sparge water (ie, 2.5gal), heat to temp, dump into the mash tun. While sparging i have time to heat the other half of the sparge water for the 2nd batch sparge.

Just curious, when you guys split sparges, do you stir, vorlouf, drain, then do the same with the second amount of water?

I have always just sparged with one addition, stir, vorlouf, drain... sorry for the hijack.
