The blue is pretty good. Its balanced but it's too restrained on the hops for my taste.

I entered mine in there. That's a very opinion base competition. Mine was a lot more hops and a mess lol.

Having Avery- czar. Yum

Cigar City American Double Black was awesome, I only had one bottle, it sold out the week it was released at my local liquor store. Your best bet in Orlando would be the Total Wine or Knightly Spirits.

I checked both and was only able to find a 4 pk of the humidor series ipa. No bottle dates, I am sure that it is a little old as well. Oh well. I am chilling 2 bottles as we speak and will try soon.

So, after a miserable day of work followed by a bad report from school for my son, I decided to do a head-to-head-to-head taste test on three big Imperial IPAs. This year is my first for trying all of them so if last year was a better batch for one of them, too bad - i didn't have that! ;). Presented in order of my very biased results, first up is Hopslam.

I'd heard lots about this before, but this year was my first to actually try it. Overall nice, but too subdued for my taste. The aroma is the best part and I think the honey added subdues the hop bitterness a bit. Excellent, but a clear third place in this round-up.

Next is Alchemy Hour. Love the aroma and initial taste on this one. Very hop forward with great balance and mouthfeel. The only point that made it second was the finish wasn't as big as the winner,

Abrasive has a more piney aroma, but just as great as Alchemy. It delivers great hop flavor and wins be leaving that tingle on the tongue when you finish - as a great imperial IPA should!

I know there are lots more great IIPAs out there and it's my mission to try them all until I find my absolute favorite. Then I will win the lottery ... buy the brewery ... and put my desk on the bottling floor so I can be the quality control expert! :D

How long did you cold steep? I liked the result though - nice strong roasted flavor without being overly bitter. I might try that technique next time. In fact, I like the idea of trying vourlauf as well (since I've only mashed the dark grains along with the rest so far.)

The cold steep was right around 28 hours. I personally thoroughly enjoyed the results, but I, too am also interested see the difference from adding the roasted grains at vorlauf.

So that's good to crack open now? :D

Yes, crack it whenever you feel like it. I am very excited to hear what you think.

Right now I am finishing up a glass of my NHC DIPA which I have dubbed Raging Hop Monster. Nice fruity and citrus hop aroma with a smooth bitterness from the FWH, however I think there might be a little too much going on with the hop character. It's hard to pick out anything distinct about the hop character which could be a deal breaker.

Yeah, unfortunately a couple of months ago they stopped shipping a lot of their specialty beers to the Orlando market. I heard a couple of different stories, one is they wanted to take better care of the Tampa bay market, and the other one is that they wanted to get more beers into cans. The good news is that the Humidor IPA in 12oz bottles just came out here last week (my local was waiting on them to arrive Friday) and we are supposed to be getting Tocobaga in cans here soon.

That should give it a bigger mouthfeel, for sure (and while this wasn't thin, I think more could be an improvement.) I'm going to be doing my vanilla pumpkin porter in a couple of weeks and I think I'll try steeping them on the vorlauf with that. I'll be sure to send you a sample to check the results ;)

Great - I won't do it tonight (after having three IIPAs that wouldn't be fair) but will sample it tomorrow or Wednesday and let you know. :mug:

Uh, that's funny. Well I have a steel toe snifter that I have to send some jerk in Texas. I may just throw it on the ground, and admire the one I already have. :)

Touché Swarls, touché.

Downed a Sierra Nevada Estate 2012. It was a treat. Zesty. Hop strong but more balanced than normal SN fair. I really enjoyed their dry hop Harvest, but this one tops that. More complex.

My American Amber for NHC which is called Red Blooded 'Merican. Very similar to KRA, but it has a nicer melding of the Motueka and Nelson Sauvin characters due to using a mix of the two in both the boil and dry hop. The original KRA had all Motueka in the boil and all Nelson for dry hops. Really excited for this one since the original KRA scored a 37.5 average in a recent competition even with being almost five months old when it was judged.

BTW, I prostrate myself before you and offer my humblest apology for this atrocious pic.

My Red IPA. Only a week bottled now.Almost there.Turned out Blood orange :rockin: havent seen much of any beers this color- (from my sample I thought it was going to be a murky brownish amber),and tastes pretty amazing so far. Real juicy right now. Very balanced flavor too. Definatley will be refrigerating one every week to witness the hop evolution-evaluation. Maybe this one will turn some non ipa fan family members over. Its a pretty non-threatining ipa. Will post a pic when/if it clears soon. I could have gave it more fridge time but 2 days was all I could take.

I'm drinking a nice IPA and my baby is having a bottle full of milk, she is 1. Can't wait tell my nut brown is done.

It's a crystal skull vodka bottle that I got for x-mas. The vodka wasn't that good, but the bottle is cool, so I fill it with this now. The drink is, 2 shots of grey goose, and a splash of roses lime over ice.

Can't remember the name, but if I remember correctly Dan Akroyd is an owner of the company with the vodka in the skull.
