Today I’m getting near the end of my Helles journey for 2025. Part of that involves a great beer out of California, North Coast Scrimshaw Pilsner. Hey wait – did you say Pilsner? I thought we were in for another malty Helles!

Well, in the Pilsner to Helles overlapping grey zone, there are a few examples. Although Scrimshaw is released as a Pilsner, each and every time I drink it, Helles comes to mind. Granted it has just a slight more zing or effervescence than I’m used to in a typical Helles, it’s still in the family I think, so I’m saying Helles. Just calling balls and strikes folks!

Scrimshaw comes to us with the traditional Water, Malted Barley, Hops and Yeast – a great lineup for duplicating a Euro Helles. I think the low IBU of 22 has me thinking more of a 16-22 IBU range Helles - most Bavarian style Pilsners I’ve been drinking lately are easily in the 22-40 range. Helles it is! Prost!

I have a fridge full of IPAs from treehouse but this one was calling my name tonight. Peppery, spicy, dry and shockingly carbonated for a can. Very very good, I hope the one I have fermenting now is like this, kind of wish I would have used belle saison.

Love every pic you take of the family barn.

Here's a pic you'll find a chuckle on my way to Oxbow Brewing. Ran into an Amish family selling produce. First I was shocked by the particle board. Second? Vindified by numerous OSHA violations and a huge lightening storm approaching from the left. I was certain I was going to see the husband zapped on the roof

Thanks… although my family wasn’t the first on this property, I’m 3rd generation going on 76 years. As near as I can tell, my barn is approximately 121 years old. I installed that metal roof myself about 8 years ago and can appreciate the work it takes to do it!!!

Congratulations Hoppy! Very impressive for that style!

So we live on 1/4ac (No HOA 👍) and about 75% with some type of vegetation. With all the rain and my injury, it's gotten a bit out of hand. Don't own a mower, long story, so I use a gas powered weed eater most of the time. Decided to buy this Harbor Freight battery powered weed eater since I already had the 5Ahr battery. This thing did the entire property with this tiny bit of string and battery power left! It'll chew through trees starting to pop up also. Property is not immaculate but at least it doesn't look squatters live here. 😁 Very impressed and that deserves a beer.

Rounding turn 4 and into the homestretch, this month’s Helles project is nearing an end – one more to go after this tasty Paulaner!

No need for introductions here – Paulaner is one of Munich’s oldest brewers, established in 1634. Paulaner has the great notoriety of developing the current “Festbier” which is both emulated and served at Oktoberfest celebrations worldwide. Paulaner also makes one of my favorite Pilsners.

I don’t know what it is, but there’s something about the English description of “Hell” that has German marketing departments doing backflips. They just can’t get themselves to put something on the label that says “Hell,” or “Light” in German. May I humbly suggest the “Helles” variation then…. You don’t need to re-name it for crying out loud! Was sind wir, ein haufen babys!

Original Münchner Lager, or Münchner Hell everywhere else is a delicious Munich Helles, with a 4.9% ABV and a modest 20 IBU. This is a terrific Helles, and available at nearly every bottle shop here in the States. Give it a try! Prost!

HBT needs a "drooling" react button 🤤

I know a fair amount of people around here who knock 805. In my opinion though I think it's a pretty darn good blonde ale.
I first tried it on the dad trips to SLO. I don't normally buy it but there was a nice sample lady at the supermarket. It seemed like a good deal because, you know, I'm always thinking with my head!

Onto crappy stuff. The A/C is not cooling the house off properly. There is air flow but seems minimal. Checked all filters. Temperature out of the registers is running 60F which means delta-T is about right. But hit 77F inside. 🤔

1st of many...

That's this week's special. Every week from mon-thurs for $17 you get a lunch and a full pour. I try to stay away from pizza but on Tuesdays they do a pizza special that's crazy good for dinner.

The chef is pretty good. Last year they had a fresh fish connection and had some sushi and sashimi specials on salad. Really good. I'd like for them to have one big healthy item on the menu but those fries are hard to avoid.

OT: double oaked cock. Almost scotch like.

HB Pale Ale loosely based on Georgetown Manny's. I say loosely because I was low on hops, so it got dry hopped with some Citra along with Cascade. Quite tasty although a bit drier than I like. One of the three I'll be sending to the Washington State Fair in the next week or so.
