Pulled a glass of the ~11% Barleywine after a month on gas. Aged for a year in a Brett-inoculated bourbon barrel and blended with 6% Red Rye IPA and an older year (2019?) of BW that was 13% but still too sweet. The Brett has been chewing up some of those residual sugars, adding a slight tang. It has a caramel, dried fruit & orange aroma. I think once it warms up to about 50F it'll be really nice, but it's very muted at 34F (kegerator/bottling temp). Very little head, but a lot of lacing on the glass. I don't taste the alcohol, but I am feeling it. This needs some blue cheese, dammit! Not in the glass, mind, but as the dessert course with this bruiser. Too bad we aren't doing the 12 Beers of Christmas 2024, I would probably have put in a bottle of this as the bonus beer.

Just realized you can see my complete Flying Circus in the background. As psychologists are fond of saying, "Well, that explains a lot."

Tonight I’m imbibing in my favorite “go to” diet beer - Bud Zero! Not to be confused with Bud Light!

I’m back from the daughter’s wedding, hooray! So the upshot of last week’s culinary and malt-based hedonism is a gain of a whopping 6 lbs!

So back on the low-ish carb, lowish booze and general lowish pleasure diet. Hey, I didn’t know they had Nacho-cheese flavored Cicharrones! Oh the beer - two of these little guys fit my 24 oz beer glass nicely! Cheers.

Now for the trivia. Why does New Glarus not have to list the ABV of its content on the can or bottle?

Not sure what the “rules” say on posting ABV. Guessing there is a certain level at which you have to, somewhere in wine territory. Plenty of MI brews that don’t have ABV listed as well

"Intrepida", a Golden Ale by Maso Alto

I thought I was too old to fall in love head over heels, but here I am. In Italy, of all places: a country I had almost written off in terms of beer, hypothesising that the quality of Italian wines suffocated any desire to master the art of brewing.

Intrepida is refreshing without being thin, hugely aromatic with a near impossible balance and harmony of flavours, all with a moderate alcohol content.
In short it's all I could wish for in a beer.

So the posting of ABV is only required if the state in which the beverage is produced requires it to be listed on the container. Weird, huh? Since Wisconsin doesn’t mandate it, neither does the Fed. But if, say Maryland required it, any containers distributed outside of Md would have to list ABV.

Like most liquor laws, both State and Fed, the logic and the reasoning are often not present.

Out back with another HB ESB.

Thanks @pshankstar, glad you liked it. What you described as a drying finish is probably what my taste buds sensed as astringent a couple weeks ago. My senses of taste and smell haven't been quite right since I got Covid last fall.

Maybe time took the edge off the beer, for both your bottle and mine.
