OK. Two beers that I saw while buying this Griffin Claw and thought I've seen on here:

Monkey King by New Holland
2013 La Folie by New Belgium

Thoughts?

I would get the la folie, no questions asked. Its really sour, but not too much more than ccb american sour you had, and is just incredible overall. I absolutely love la folie.

La Folie is a great beer for entering the sour world if you aren't there already. If you are, I would have it on tap in my kegerator year round if it was possible.

I am not knowledgeable of sours. Should the date concern me or do they do well with age?

EDIT: I knew you'd be the one to chime in on that beer.

Date doesnt matter and in fact most some sours hit their peak after a few years. La folie is pasteurized so it wont change much if at all. I wouldnt hesitate to buy a 2011 if i saw it on the shelves.

Edit: I'm sure most now know my love for this beer :D

If you find somewhere that sells it by the 6er, let me know. I've only seen it by the single 500ml bottle.

I have been meaning to get out to total wine and buy a couple to give them a try since you keep talking them up. I will be on the lookout for a 6er of them as well.

They are pasteurized but shouldn't change much. I have one laying around in my beer alcove though have had a 2012 and a 2013 side by side last summer and they were both darn tasty.

Speaking of good entry level sours...

Haven't had this in a while. Donated the dregs into my Sour Stout.

You don't brew sours, do you? Doesn't that stuff taint your equipment forevermore?

To a degree, yes. I now have three fermenters designated to sours but the big thing is bottling equipment and hoses. Everything I use in the sours are sour only. You could clean glass fermenters and reuse them for regular beers, but I won't take that chance.

After tasting that CCB Sour, I thought about it. Something in my head said, wait...you're going to intentionally "infect" a beer in your fermentor? Better do a little research first.

It's not as intimidating as people think. On most sour styles, you can brew like you would normally and just pitch a lacto/Pedro/Brett yeast. The main thing that is different is you have to wait a lot longer before you can bottle. If I were you, I would look at the consecration kit on more beer. I am about to order that here soon and would be perfect for someone just starting out in sours.

Glad to pop on and read the sour discussion. I have been meaning to inquire about a good entry level to try! I'd love to brew my own but have yet to even taste one. I didn't even know sour beer existed until a few months ago ...

Still drinking my crappy wine. But I'll have a new gallon fermenting jug once it's gone! :drunk

Sours intrigue me because the wife seems to like them, but she hates IPA's. I thought she just didn't like strong tastes in beer but the CCB was pretty damn sour, in my opinion. It could push her over to the craft beer dark side...

Haha whatever it takes to get her there. Honestly, if you can brew beer you can brew sour beer. It's pretty easy.

Will do for sure. I already brew and drink kombucha so I think I will like sour beer? Maybe?

I'm not sure as I've never had kombucha. I'd pick up some Jolly pumpkin and see if you like them.

My wife has really gotten into sours. So much so that I'm not allowed to drink any without her approval because she is with child currently. She tries IPAs every now and again but if we go to a bar she gets a stout or sour typically. What I'm getting at is sours may be a gateway for her to try out other stuff.

Keeping with the theme, another good entry-level sour. And more dregs donated. Just double checked The Mad Fermentationist's viable dregs list beforehand, and actually surprised this has viable bugs. Figured it'd be pasteurized.

One of the best entry level sours IMO. I need to grab one out of the cellar to chill. That also surprises me it's viable.

Water.

Prepping for tomorrow...I'll be bottling my latest IPA and brewing yet again. No one around to help/get in the way/drink my beer.

Carbonated Apfelwein. Not that bad, but a little too sweet. I used 71-B this time; I think it was better when I made it last year with EC-1118.
Watching hockey.
