Is "f*cks" as a beer judging metric mean a good thing or bad thing?

I used to go to this really nice restaurant. It was in the basement of this old 1800's bank on the coast. Huge granite blocks. It was like a bunker. It had an incredible.beer list and Old Rasputin was on it. I started to drink it and I could tell it was aged. The waitress noticed my reaction and said "I don't get it. No one orders that. Only the owner drinks that and he has cases of it stored in the vault"
I LOVED that spot!!!
I always felt it was a sharp/harsh roastiness. Could be the high level of bitterness too?View attachment 876857
There was a bit of chatter on this thread recently about how this beer might be too bitter. I can see where that comes from, but thereās also something so appropriate about it. This beer f*cks.
Iāve had the pleasure of enjoying it on nitro a few times, and I must admit it really shines in that format. But there is something about the aggressive nature of that beer that just works for me. Iām not usually one to fetishize hardship or struggle in a beverage, but my chest hair does feel a bit thicker every time I drink one.I always felt it was a sharp/harsh roastiness. It's been a few years since I have had it though.
That's a good point nitro does have a way with smoothing out dark beers. I'll keep an eye out for it. I might pick up a pack of it to give it another shot.Iāve had the pleasure of enjoying it on nitro a few times, and I must admit it really shines in that format. Does whatever you used to make it dark interfere, or mesh, with those hops?My homebrewed Hoppy black lager. This is pretty darn good. Really interesting.
6.2% abv hoped with Citra, Simcoe, and Sabro View attachment 876883
It actually works well. The coconut from the Sabro seems to bridge all gaps. I think itās because coconut is a familiar note with dark beers. Taste like a dark lager with a bright citrus and coconut character and finishes with bitter sweet chocolateDoes whatever you used to make it dark interfere, or mesh, with those hops?
Duck Dude needs consultation after the Husker BB beat down today. Okay little buddy, this Tripel is for you!

If anyone can put that all together, I know you can. Maybe in retirement, I'll be visiting your "Brewery", it's on a list! Haha!It actually works well. I hear you, I miss the mean, surly little 1.057-1.060 IPAs of the early '90s. They were fantastically vulgar statements by their brewers: "Yeah, we got hops and we're not afraid to use them."Itās a throwback that I love. I sort of miss beers that were unapologetic like this. Sort of an āIām not for eveyoneā vibe that has kind of disappeared.
I'm always for not enough. But I only stayed at a Holiday Inn...Strangely enough that makes sense. I either drank too much, or not enough.
