I may have the opportunity to pick up a 55# sack of CaraRed for wholesale cost. It's basically C-20 crystal I think. Not something that would take a long time to use up?

get it or will it sit for ages?

Whatever you don't use right away you can put in gallon ziploc bags or in 5 gallon buckets with lids. Store in a cool, dry place and it should last a few years.

Still...that's a lot of crystal malt. Maybe you could split it with a buddy?

I store about 500# assorted stuff in buckets with o-ring seals such as gamma lids and other air tight seals.

I scored a sack of Special B and a sack of UK dark crystal once..will last me a lifetime...but the price was an offer I couldn't refuse...

But this stuff seems really light crystal...don't think it will sit indefinitely

well...ended up getting the sack...and a sack of weyerman vienna and munich...plus 3 sacks of pale ale...

3 Benjamins for 300# was an offer I couldn't refuse...

It's good to be a loyal customer at the local brewery...

Like others already said it's more like a maltier Munich malt than a crystal malt.
Of course it depends on what and how often you are brewing but if stored well you should be able to use it all up before it goes bad.
It's not something like Special B, if I had a 55# of that then It would last until next century :tank:

There's a very nice Bock recipe on the Weyermann website I brew regularly which uses about 4# of CaraRed.

https://shop.weyermann.de/out/media/nr._9_willy_wonka_bock_ene_profi.pdf

I never use the exact mentioned hops as I don't ever have Aurora or Spalter and normally sub in Perle/Northern Brewer and Tettnang instead.

I was in a similar situation to you a few years ago but because I ordered more by mistake because BeerSmith didn't save my inventory properly and I thought I didnt have anymore. So I have several more recipies with a decent amount of CaraRed if you want.

EDIT: Just seen now that I recommended the same recipe as Wayne1 did a few posts back :p
You will use up a few pounds of that Munich too. Also doesn't have to be 34/70 any decent lager yeast will work.

Eyes too big for your mug🤩!

I probably could use up the Munich and Vienna but I usually just go 10lbs on those. Those are typically lagers for me so they might take some time to run through a sack.

I've gone 10lbs on C20 before but I'm cutting back and just go 3-5 pounds usually.

The pale yes.
