Hi all, Looking for a good recipe for a APA. Something I can brew in a small two gallon batch and something that I can do as an extract, partial mash brew as I'm still new to the game and not yet ready to go all grain. Anyone know of any recipes like that? I've looked some places on the web but as of yet haven't found what I'm looking for.

If you are already contemplating going all grain at some point, this might be the point. Can you heat water to 160 and be within one degree? Do you have boiling pot that will hold 5 gallons or more? If so, you can do all grain BIAB with almost no investment and that opens the whole world of all grain brewing to you. There are lots of recipes for all grain APA's and quite a few extract and partial mash recipes here on HomeBrewTalk.

These recipes have been brewed, not just someone's idea and many have follow-ups about how well they turned out or changes to make them better.

The book listed above would be a good start. Check out the recipe section here and see what others post as feedback to get a sense if it appeals to you. Other suggestions would be looking into buying kits to start off with if you haven't already done so. Or you can go to BYO's website, click on links and type in American Pale Ale and see what recipes come back. They have them in both all-grain and extract for most if not all of them. I've been brewing for 3 years and went straight to all-grain. But in the last few weeks I've been exploring extract brewing a little bit, and have done 6 extract batches in the last few weeks. Main reasons being: reduced free time available due to having an 8 week-old daughter; stovetop extract brewing keeps me out of the winter cold; I hadn't brewed in a while and needed a way to quickly build up a pipeline for the 4-tap kegerator I built.

The results of the beers so far have all been pretty good, especially considering how little time they have taken to make. I won't be giving up all-grain in favor of extract anytime soon, though.

Anyway, a dead simple 2gal APA would be to get a 3.3lb container of Breiss unhopped pale ale liquid malt extract (LME), 2-3oz of American C-hops (Cascade, Centennial, Columbus, Citra, etc.), and a pack of US-05 dry yeast. That's what I did for my first extract batch and just threw it together on the fly using hops and yeast I had on hand. It was tasty, and the keg didn't last very long.

I was going to say about the same thing. 3 lbs. Extra Light DME, US-05 yeast, .25 oz of Cascade at 1 hour, 1 oz at 15 min, 1 oz at 5 min, .75 at flameout. Should make a good hoppy Cascade pale ale. Chill it down to about 65, put it in the sanitized fermenter, add the yeast, give it at least two weeks, bottle it, wait another 2 weeks and you will have beer.
