Hi, first time i've actually tried to make a recipe, and it's for a friend who wants a "vanilla oatmeal blonde, with at least 5% abv". He also wants it on the less bitter side. Will this recipe need more bittering hops, so as to balance the maltiness/sweetness? Different hops/grains/yeast? I made it at beercalculus.hopville.com
Cheers - Thanks for any advice/criticism
Batch Size: 5 gal
Est OG: 1.059
Est FG: 1.014
Est Color: 7 SRM
Est IBU: 22
-------------------
Grains/Fermentables/Vanilla...
-------------------
5.5 lb Light DME
12 oz CaraPils
8 oz Vienna Malt
8 oz Honey
-------------------
Boil
-------------------
.5 oz Northern Brewer 8.5% (60 min)
.25 oz Northern Brewer 8.5% (50 min)
.25 oz Northern Brewer 8.5% (40 min)
.25 oz Crystal 3.5% (20 min)
.25 oz Crystal 3.5% (10 min)
.5 oz Irish Moss (10 min)
.5 oz Fuggles 4.5% (0 min)
.5 oz Fuggles 4.5% (dry hop in secondary)
----------------------
Yeast - California ale
----------------------
For the vanilla, based on what i've read it seems like 2-4 vanilla beans -halved and scraped- in the secondary might be a good idea. My friend wants a strong vanilla flavor.
