I've got a recipe for a Budweiser clone (4th july tomorrow you see,) and it calls for Flaked Rice. Not easy to find around here for some reason!

Anyway, it seems to be possible to just boil the rice to turn the starch to sugar - "boil until gelatinous" - about 45 mins - then just carry on with the usual mashing.

Obviously the rice itself is there to add clean, cheap alcohol, but I would like to stick to the recipe if possible. So how can I sub normal rice for flaked?

recipe;

7lb Crushed Lager Malt
1lb 10oz Flaked Rice
3 gallons Water for "lager" brewing
1tsp Irish Moss
2oz Hallertau Hopsz
Lager Yeast

you could use Rice Syrup solids. i use those when i make my coors light clone. good results and good tasting beer.

I think so, it is the quick cooking stuff, you make with a 1:1 ratio of water to rice, it is already converted so there is no need to do a cerial mash with it.

you can use regular rice, you just need to do a cerial mash, there are a few how-to's on here somewhere about it.

Coors Light should really be using some sort of corn adjunct, ideally brewer's corn syrup. Do you use the Coors yeast for it?

i used American Lager Wyeast for it. I used 1lb of rice syrup solids and 3 pounds of extra light DME and 5oz of corn sugar just to bring the abv around 4%.

the color, taste, and clarity all came out just like i would have hoped.

Ah. You may or may not be aware of this (I dunno, obviously), but the Coors yeast is available from Wyeast under the name "Rocky Mountain Lager" (Wyeast 2105). Give it a shot if you end up making that clone again.
