Hi all, I am a newbie brewer and am getting ready for my first all grain brew and was wondering if unscented and dye free tide laundry detergent would be acceptable as a cleaning agent before I sanitize with star san? I was looking for unscented dish liquid but couldnt find any. I used clori clean to clean my empty glass beer bottles abd want to avoid these harsher chemicals if I could.

thanks

Jamie.

I am sure that you will hear from some that will strongly disagree with using laundry detergent (I did), but I have been using Seventh Generation Free & Clear laundry detergent and it works fine. This is actually the recommendation by Better Bottle for cleaning their PET carboys, thus how I started using it and figured if it is good for one piece of equipment, it should be good for all of it.

I have brewed for close to 7 years, and in that time used nothing but Dawn dishwashing liquid to wash out my brew pot, plastic fermentation buckets, and other smaller items. I rinse thoroughly and have never had an issue.

For all the smaller stuff associated with bottling, I soak in PBW, rinse thoroughly, and then immerse in Star San. No problems there, either.

I use oxiclean free instead pbw just to be cost effective. But I have resorted to what was available on the fly several times (Dawn included) with good results.

If you rinse well anything that will clean up organics should be OK. Personally I use pbw, in the big tubs it is not that pricey and works well.

I rinse out all my gear right after I'm done with it. This makes cleaning really easy. I use oxyclean free to clear the gear. But, I "recycle" the oxyclean. The rinsing gets most gunk off and the oxyclean gets the rest. Then, I pour the oxyclean into a tub for the next batch. It really cuts down on the cost. I do the same with star San.

I don't have the ability to use oxiclean with our water- too much calcium and iron. PBW has chelators to take care of the hard water.

Family Dollar Stores "Oxygenated Stain Remover"

I found it in the store, contacted Family Dollar via e-mail to inquire if it was "unscented" before I opened it.

It took a week, but the buyer called me back and said "Yes, it's unscented, and yes it comes from the same place that those "Oxyclean" folks get theirs".

4 bucks a tub.

I can get oxyclean but not the free version..I guess it may have some scent I dunno? Whats the issue with scents anyway if you rinse really well? Im Just going to go with any dish liquid and rinse alot then go with the star san to sanitize.
