This is in minnesota where it is still cold at night so they are just starting to grow.

Did I do this right?

Went out to cut the bull shoots, one nugget had lots of the purple relatively smooth without bristles shoots 8-9 inches tall plus a lot of smaller ones which i cut. the willamette had only a few tall smooth purple shoots but my second nugget only had two shorter purples which i cut. the rest of it is covered by inch tall bright green shoots that are bristled so think they are good.

is it common to have such a difference between two hop plants?
i am leaving all green bines that are really covered by bristles to grow.

I'm in MA, I usually cut back all the first growth around mid-May. I was nervous to do so at first, but the second growth always comes back very strong.
Also, I only have two plants, a cascade and a goldings. My cascade always has more and earlier growth. The goldings has always lagged behind.

We’ve got four plants growing - Cascade, Mt Hood, Nugget and Brewer’s Gold. Here in North-Western WI, they were never trimmed back at our old place, and we never had an issue getting a fine crop.

At our new place, the rhizomes are spreading more. I’ve trimmed them back to be closer to the supports. Again, no problems.

Hops can stand quite a bit of interference.

installed the rope yesterday and went to start training them. Noticed I had bines probably 24-30'' long but space between nodes 8-10". Squeezed them slightly and like sponge. Cut them and hollow like straws. If i bent them slightly they would snap like a pea pod. I hacked off all the long ones again. Found some 15" tall that looked and felt right. Had nodes every 3-5" or so.
