Hey Guys,
I brewed an ESB yesterday and missed my OG horribly (.013)! I only have three BIAB's under my belt but have been very satisfied with my OG's so far (+8, +1. -1) and my FG's (+2, +2, -7).

Apparently I did too much reading and decided I was going to add a mash out step by heating to 168 while the bag was hanging and use 1 gallon of that to "sparge" with out of a pitcher. That is the only thing that was different about this batch and my mash stayed within the 156 I needed. Could this throw my OG off that much (1.060 to 1.047)?

I can't see how that can throw your OG off by that much. Are you sure your thermometer is right? I found that when my thermometer is reading temps under 180 it is anywhere from 4-8 degrees off (a dial thermometer). When it hits over 180 it is more closer to 4 degrees off. I bought a thermapop instead.

Who crushed your grains? Did you and was it consistent? It's hard to say that adding a mash out step messed anything up that much. Did you stir enough?

I'll check my thermometer..... I double mill me grains at my LBHS and I stirred about every 15 minutes.

What LHBS do you use? I use Atlantic Brew Supply and my efficiency is pretty low. I am curious if it is the grain and not me. Until they get their new mill running, I am going to try a different LHBS for grain next time and just see if it changes things. I'd rather give my $ to Atlantic but I need to test this small theory.

Yeah I do use AB. They have replaced the motor on the wooden mill. Are they getting a new mill?

Atlantic Brew Supply in Raleigh is. AB in Raleigh was always crap for me…mostly their CS. They just seem like they don't want to help but the more help I get the more money I tend to spend. Ask Atlantic Brew Supply that anytime.

Were you talking about American Brewmaster or Atlantic? Atlantic has a new mill sitting on their floor waiting for the cabinet.

Yes Atlantic Brew Supply. Now that you mention it, I do remember seeing a mill sitting near the end of the counter top.

I've always felt that American Brewmaster's employees were less helpful and personable than Atlantic Brew Supply..... But, in their defense, when I found ABS I loved the layout, space, bar, customer service, etc.

Did you end up with more wort than normal? Might not have boiled that extra gallon of water off unless you boiled more vigorously or longer. I think tasty brew has a calculator that could calculate your brew house efficiency if you knew how much wort you ended up with.

This was the first time using my new 15 gallon pot but my guesstimates (and beersmith equipment profile) were very close. I'm pretty sure that I hit my 5.25 gallons for the fermenter.
