Hi all...posted this on another forum and didn't get much, hoping someone here can give me a good answer:

My friend and I were transferring our irish red from the carboy into the bottling bucket, and just as we finished, my half empty bottle of toothpaste falls into the bottling bucket.

We did not know what it was at first, and it was in there for a good 10 minutes until we fished it out with the bottling wand.

My question is, do you think the bacteria on the outside of the tube will be enough to contaminate the entire batch? I had sanitized both the bucket and the bottles with star-san, which i did not rinse out...so I'm hoping there will be enough residual in there to fight any infection? I don't know.

I'm also wondering if you think the little bits of dried toothpaste on the outside of the tube will affect the flavor of the final beer...what do you think?

Thanks...

i'm sure it will be fine. worse things have definitely happened and the beer turns out fine. just chalk that one up to experience!

the beer should be fine, but it won't be due to any small quantity of star-san left in the bottles. it loses 100% of its sanitizing function when it's diluted. The beer is fermented, so the chances of an infection are fairly small, and shouldn't be very fast in taking hold if there is an infection. may be a little minty. Colgate Irish Red - yum!

wait wait.

how did you drop a toothpaste tube into your beer? hah, i'm just curious.

and yeah, you should be fine.

You will most likely end up with a beer that will make you smile......And it will be a nice bright white smile too! :D <------Like that one

I'm sorry, but this is probably the funniest thing I've heard so far. I know you had concerns, but surely you can look back now and laugh(?). I know I can...

There's so much material here: Where are you bottling, your bathroom? If it took 10 minutes to realize you dropped toothpaste in your bucket, it is possible you'll realize in a day or two that you also dropped your contact lens solution in there as well? I'm not trying to be mean, but seriously...toothpaste? I think next time you should consider a checklist of things not to bring to your bottling session. Toothpaste should be on that list. Shoe polish, fire extinguisher, lawn fertilizer...all excellent items to not have handy when bottling.

Like I said, I'm only trying to point out what I think is very funny, and I'm not trying to be mean. On the plus side, you will be able to absolutely dominate the toothpaste ale market.

OOOOOOOOOOOOh! Save those bottles as your "one for the road" and when you or your friend gets pulled over - you'll be minty fresh!
I am imagining a Rumple Minze flavored beer.
