I fear I have confused people with "not typically thought of as a fruit."

It is not a vegetable or a gourd either. Anything that grows on a plant and contains the plant's seeds is botanically a fruit, even if it is classified into a subcategory of that (such as drupe, of which mango is an example [but it's not mango]).
 
Pomegranate is commonly considered a fruit. Chili peppers are commonly considered vegetables. It's not either of those.
