Hello yet again ladies and gentlemen. I have what I think is my final recipe for my first american style light lager. Tell me what ya think about flavor and such. I am trying to brew without using rice.

1lb 40L carmel malt (steep for 20 min. at 155-165F)
3lb Briess pilsen (extra light) BME
1lb pure honey. U.S. harvest organic hippie stuff (I planned on a 15min boil at the end)

1/2 oz. cascade (60 min)
1/2 oz. cascade (30 min)
1/2 oz. cascade (5 min)

White Labs 840 americian style lager yeast (Wyeast 2035 was too hard to get for some reason)

And then fermenting and lagering at recommended temps and time.

If you can't tell I'm trying to keep this one simple. Big fan of the cascade hop

Thanks in advance:drunk:

I'm not sure whether you mean dry or liquid extract. Also, have you plugged this recipe into Beersmith or other program to find a projected original gravity?

Is that five gallons?

Way too much crystal. A Light lager needs none. Your looking for a FG near zero.

Too much hops. This style should have as little flavor as possible. Only a bittering addition.

I'd add the honey at flame out.

yes this is for 5 gallons. I never heard about this beer smith site. hmmm. I do mean Dried malt extract

well I think I will hold the urine. I can only drink so much IPA,Pale Ale and blah blah blah. I enjoy all beer

I think the caramel's fine but I'd use 10L or your beer won't look very light.
Agreed on the addition of honey at flameout... keeps the aroma and flavor (boiling tends to kill it).
Also agreed on the pissing for bud-clone

Hops should be fine depending on your alpha acid... you're really only using one ounce (last 5 min don't add any bittering). If your cascade is closer to 7 then you'll be high in IBUs for the style as previously mentioned. If you love your cascade hops then do it up, brother.

hey tamarack what do you think about a light munich malt? I don't want it too light or too dark for that matter, but a nice dark yellow, border line amber color. vienna is the next step down. is that going to be more straw colored?

A light American lager, but more hops, darker color, bit of caramel character, no rice....

You have described a German pilsener, my friend. If you're down with that, go for it.

Oh, and vienna and munich will add nutty/roasty flavors instead of the straight-up caramel sweetness light crystal will give. If you want to move a bit toward vienna lager/munich dunkel flavor, that would be the way to go. But it really wouldn't be much like a American light lager then (depending on the quantity of course).

Agree on all from Skyforger.
For 0311USMC: I wouldn't worry too much about categories since you're much more interested in a tasty brew. Who knows, if you love the end product (which sounds like it'll be good), maybe you adjust it later to fit into the category you think most appropriate.
Overall, your recipe sounds good and if what Skyforger said about the Vienna is spot on. I personally adore all levels of Crystal/Caramel malts (10L all the way up to 120L).
