Ah, the camera nose cone. IIRC, that one took pictures after the rocket was under chute. I could never afford one. We had a neighborhood collective kit. We did have the Big Bertha rocket though.

I believe it took the picture right as the charge to pop the nose cone off happend (that's what triggered the camera).

I had it at one point, not sure what ever happened to it. The problem was developing that film was expensive!

And yes, I had the Big Bertha as well....

Damn, I may need to try and find the old set up...

Sure they can. They just enjoy bigger ones and have to pull permits to launch them.

I remember I had a skinny 3 stage rocket that you'd lose sight of everytime. If you were lucky you would see the parachute coming down and chase it for half a mile. Ahh, the good old days.

As a drafting project in school me and a friend of mine drew up the plans to build a model Saturn V rocket which was about 3’ tall. The idea was you could use the plans to actually build it which we did at school too. We even put a wolf spider through astronaut training to go in the payload area, surrounded by cotton. It had 3 stages each with what I remember to be 3 C size engines for a total of nine. This thing had crazy power for the time. Well, we got all the stages back except for the payload and nose cone. Even with a hole in the parachute with the height that thing attained we never saw it again. We even put our names and the school address in case that happened so it could be returned if found. I will probably never know what happened to it or the spider. :(

I was driving down the island the other day and there were some kids flying an RC model airplane and it made me think back to when I was a kid. I always wanted an RC airplane, but never got one. I was getting wistful about never having had one and then thought... hey, I'm a grown up now with my own job and own checking account! I'm gonna buy my own damn airplane!

And maybe a helicopter too :D

YES!!! I had a payloader one also (not that big though). We would put in crickets and the would get smushed by the G forces. One time we filled the whole payloader with copper BBs - the damn thing was too heavy to lift off! That's was scary!

I also took the F14 Estes rocket (It was supposed to launch and be a glider), and glued the wings shut and put two extrea C-8-0s in the tubes for a total of three. Damn near started a brush fire with that one :D And I have video!

Heck when I was a kid we didn't have RC planes. We had the planes that were attached to two strings. You basically maneuvered the thing by rotating in a circle till you got dizzy or ran out of gas. I loved those planes... maybe I'll go antique shopping and find me one...

Holy crap, I haven't thought of Dungeons of Daggorath in years. I think we played that game for a week straight until we killed it.

The hardest part was learning how to type the same attack commands over and over again.

Funny how you wish you still had things you used to or built yourself. Our teacher put the plans and what was left of the rocket in a display case in the classroom as an example to encourage others to try new projects. Most kids would just draw what was in the book.

With another friend and his father and outside school we built a fiberglass canoe. Took the wood strips, wet and heated them so they would bend and built the rib frame and then put the fiberglass over it. It was actually too skinny and would tip over easily. Not sure what ever happened to it. That friend's father was pretty cool, he would make violins from scratch and even built an electric guitar from his own design.

No need, control line flying is still very active and doing well. Just visit any hobby shop.

We had problems getting multiple engines to ignite simultaneously with the Estes launch box; so my school science teacher helped us rig it up to the car battery for more power!!!

Knowing that makes my day. Fond memories... We used to go to a local park that had an area with a circular pad that was set up for control line flying...wonder what the wife would think if I started another hobby.... Hmmmm....Now if I could only find a slot car track. The real ones.............Not the tiny home version.

OMG I LOVED slot cars! The second floor of our local hobby shop was a huge track. Braided copper contacts, Parma controllers....

... I actually saw packs of candy cigarettes for sale in a local drug store the other day. I swear, there's a time machine you walk through on the way into this pharmacy. They weren't labeled candy "cigarettes," they were "Candy Sticks," but they came in a damn cigarette pack.

On the counter right next to the non-ironic tin of Jesus bandages.
