Right. Thats what we called em too. Just sayin we wore right through the front wheel on several of them. My cousin had an awesome patio in front of his house must have been about 8'x60' that sloped from one end to the other. We never visited without bringing the Big Wheels along.

Yeah, if you lock up the front wheel just right using the pedals you could get them to do a neat skid.

Looks like you can get these again. Also the Green Machine.

We wore out our share of big front wheels as kids.

My son was just riding that exact big wheel in the garage last night. I got it from a guy at work cleaning out his garage. Missing the seat back, but my boy just scoots around on it. He can't reach the pedals yet. Those are the best!!

Radio Flyer has one now. New and Improved. Rubber tread on the front. Chrome handle bars with bicycle grips. No handbrake tho'.

Bought my son one when he was 3. Still waiting for him to grow into it.

I rode a big wheel that had been retreaded with duct tape several times.

Thats funny....my dad did the same on ours.

This is the Green Machine my cousin used to have which he wouldn't let us ride

I have been trying to search for a toy my buddy used to have. No idea what it was called but it was basically a disk with a few castor wheels around the edges you sat on a seat low to the ground in between two big wheels with hand grips. You could rotate either direction for forward backward or oposite for spins. The thing was a blast...anyone know what they are called and if they are still around. I would love to get one for my kids.

I had something like this when I was a kid, but don't remember it being called a Krazy Kar.

I had one too and don;t have a clue what it was called I just know it was more Butch space saucer looking than this. I actually just googled for ride on toys of the 70's and found that. Knew it was close and posted it.

Metal Lunchboxes.

CB Radio

Putting cards in your bicycle spokes

Manual transmission on an american car

Prodigy, Compuserve, AOL

I want to say the one I had started with a W. I found online that they also were sometimes called Crazy Wheels or Whiz Wheels, depending on the manufacturer. I'm pretty sure mine was one of these.

  • Bikes with banana seats.
  • Riding in the "way back" of the station wagon on family trips.
  • Ashtrays on airplanes
  • Yellow Front stores
  • Labelle's
  • Perusing the Sears "Wish book" before Christmas.
  • Cap guns that looked like real guns
  • Athletic socks with stripes at the top
  • Wooden tennis rackets (and Bjorn Borg).
  • Saturday morning cartoons
  • Toughskins jeans
Some of these have probably been covered already, but here you go.

As a kid, one of my friend's parents had a Mercedes station wagon where the back seat faced the rear window. Perfect for making obscene gestures at the car behind you. :D

I live in Phoenix. We still make obscene gestures at the car behind us. The only difference is I now do it to the car beside me and the car in front of me, too. :D

Action figures; 6 million dollar man and the Evil Kinevel motorcyle set.
+1 for Saturday morning cartoons. However, Sunday morning brew days usually start off with the Three Stoges.....

These are still more, er, around. I drive a 2006 Saturn Vue, 6 speed manual transmission

Well, I guess Saturn is no more.

Yeah. For a bit there it seems manual tranny's came back as rear wheel drive got shelved. Now with the new range of retro throwbacks both are back. Next up, the re-introduction of 4 wheel steering.

Dating myself here, but:

-Big Wheel
-Pop Rocks & Diet Coke (said the diabetic)
-Nerf bow & arrow
-Micro Machines & their infinite number of expansion sets
-M.U.S.C.L.E. Men
-Puffer pants with seizure-inducing patterns of blue and purple
-Slap bracelets

Stealing black powder from my friends dad to make pipe bombs. He eventually gave up and just started buying it for us. Then later helped us build better ones :) Love to see what would happen today if you tried that...

Estes Model Rockets
Dodgeball
potato guns
My mom tying a rope to the back of the car so we could take turns getting pulled around the neighborhood on a sled.

This is why I can't have kids, I'd end up doing all the same stuff with them and going to jail.

Meh. I still get Estes model rockets. But I remember getting one as a young adult from the scout master. The scouts couldn't use it because it was missing a cog for the camera part. I sent a letter to Estes asking for the part and a bill and they just sent the part.

I probably should take the kids over to the airport and lift a few more off before they are too old to appreciate it. Cause, you know, adults can't enjoy model rockets!

Ah, the camera nose cone. IIRC, that one took pictures after the rocket was under chute. I could never afford one. We had a neighborhood collective kit. We did have the Big Bertha rocket though.

-Big Wheel

Man I loved my Big Wheel! My neighbor had this big hill beside his house. We would take the seat off, then get a good running start while holding onto the handlebars. When we couldn't run any faster, we would jump on kind of like a bobsled.

We'd go flying down the hill to a concrete pad at the bottom and then jerk the hand brake and spin around. More than once we'd be going too fast and roll the thing across the concrete. Good times...
