When two (or more) of the upper management staff go on power trips and make conflicting executive decision changes to the way things are done. It is especially enjoyable when one sends out a decision along the lines of 'This is the change, I do not want to hear about it until after it is implemented and then only if it is constructive'. Then this message gets forwarded by the other one to the wide distribution rather than just those involved. Passive aggressive much?

When there's a work event and they want volunteers to serve food and your coworker volunteers you to do it when you are out to lunch and cant speak for yourself.

I got her back cause i volunteered her to stay at the office this Friday when the rest of us will be working remote from home.

A few people have printers in their offices because they are special.
But in general, most of us have to print to the communal printer, which is located in the printing, copying, faxing room.

When one particular guys personal printer runs out of paper, he goes into the printing room, opens up the copier or printer and pillages the paper from it, rather than opening a new box of paper and helping himself. Pure laziness. Another gripe, is that when he has a really big print job, instead of using his own he sends it to the communal printer, which ties it up for about 30 minutes.

I work for an environmental company so I get it when the office stress "green" alternatives. This time, though, they've pissed me off. They put this junior employee who everyone despises in the "green initiative" role because no one else wanted to do it. Now, all plastic utensils have been removed and replaced with metal cutlery. We have quarterly meetings where the office admin will nag about how people just leave dirty dishes in the sink or how people don't clean out the dishwasher so she has to do it. I've come here on the weekend and every single light is on...think they'd want to do something about that but nooooo plastic spoons and forks are the problem.

So why not replace all light switches with mechanical 60min timers? :D

A place I went to recently had a timer based motion sensor light switch. As long as there had been motion in the past X amount of time in front of the sensor, the lights (or circuit if you really wanted to be technical) stayed on. And the sensor... Actually replaced where the switch used to be.

I've been pushing for us to get rid of all the disposable kitchen items, as well. We too are an environmental company. Yeah. Real environmental of us to use plastic cutlery and styrofoam cups and plates. Not only that, styrofoam is not good for heated food and beverage.

For what it costs to continuously buy throw away junk, we could buy reusable utensils, and be spending less within a year or less. It's good for the Earth and the budget.

But you've already hit on why we don't. People wouldn't clean up after themselves. We already have that problem with the few pots and pans we have now. I swear. These are professionals. Licensed, skilled and educated adults. Well, adult sized, anyway.

Ass kickings is what they need.

Styrofoam is kind of a no-win, but you can at least recycle plastic utensils (assuming there is a recycling program in your area).

My co-workers think I'm weird because I drink tap water throughout the day instead of bottled. Um yeah, I drink 3 or 4 cups a day. Recycling or not, what's the point in using up that many bottles every single day?

Our communal printer can override the users desktop preferences. You can set yourself up at your desk to print in color by default all you want. The purchasing super has the printer set to b&w, so that's what you get unless you choose color each time. She does this because color costs money. La de da! So does paper and all the time spent re printing. Nearly everything my dept prints must be in color. It's a freaking color coded system! I'm so glad we finally got our own printer for the control system.

And no, I will not print a copy, mark it up, make you a copy of that and bring it to you. This is 2014. I will use the notes feature and email it to you. Save a damn tree already!

A few of us do bring our own coffee mugs and cups, even though we have recycling for paper and plastic. The same of us also use our own utensils from home as much as we can.

We've thought about just not ordering the throw aways any more and pretty much forcing people to bring their own stuff, but the big boss says he doesn't feel like dealing with the insurrection that would cause. Screw em, I say.

We've been dealing with this recently. I figured people would be more inclined to take care of their own stuff (I always used my own coffee cup). We tried it out, but people just left their dishes in the sink; it was an absurd mess.

People suck.

Yep, make people bring their own mugs and you'll get 10 dirty mugs perpetually left around the sink. The people not bringing mugs don't bring mugs because they don't like washing dishes.

Ya we get a buildup of dishes in the sink too, even though there's a sign over the sink that says: "PLEASE WASH YOUR DISHES." Sometimes those dishes will sit there till things start growing inthem & the stink becomes unbearable; then we put up a note warning that those dishes must be washed within an alloted time (usually a few days) or they will be thrown away. It amazes me that people would allow their dishes to be thrown away, rather than wash them, or take them home dirty & wash them there.

The other thing that gets me is people leaving doors open. Not front doors, those close automatically, but cupboard doors, electrical panel doors, even the kitchen drawers; somebody will leave them open after getting what they want & just walk away. I can't help but wonder if they do this at home. Is their house a collection of open cupboard doors? Are all the drawers open? Do they leave the front door open too? You're right, people do suck; not all of them, just the vast majority of them.
Regards, GF.

At my main job(I have two) people wander why we can't keep gloves and safety glasses stocked. BUT those same people are standing in line every single day for a new pair. I have watched on a few occasions some of them take a brand new pair out of the plastic, work one night with them, and toss them on the coal belt at the end of the shift. Seriously? And you also wander why a pay raise is so hard to come by. Ive used the same pair for months on end....

Hate it when some colleagues use up all the water in the water dispenser and don't replace the bottle after themselves. Grrr...

Sounds like Boeing...

we have the same problem where I work. company pays for all our consumables: gloves, welding tips, cones, safety glasses, welding jackets, face shields, welding hoods, cover lenses, etc...

when I started for the company, I brought my pancake hood instead of using a standard they provide. my hood takes the 2 1/4"x4" lens (inside & outside). they got me a box of 100 and it lasted me over a year. now they're replacing all the standard hoods with ones that take my small lens on the inside. the 5-6 guys that have this new hood have already gone through around 300 in the last 3 months. these are also the same guys that won't use nozzle dip or or clean their tips/cones/insulators. the guy that works in my area at night can go through 3-4 tips a night. I can make 1 tip last for 2 weeks of heavy welding. before they set the glove limit on the vending machine, a lot of these guys were getting a new pair every 2 days. limit is now set to 1 pair every 7 days. and the fancy sanding discs get thrown away when they're still good. I used the used ones only for 2 weeks to use them up.

We had an issue at work with the dishes in the sink. One shift was particularly bad about leaving stuff everywhere. One guy on my shift took it upon himself to rectify the problem. If he found their dirty dishes in the sink, he put them by the trash can. If they were still by the trash can the next day, they went in the trash can. They got the point, ms now they are more streamlined because they don't have as many dishes to leave laying around.

We did the same to our building about 5 years ago. If the lights go out in my office I take it as a sign to go for a walk.

That is all well and good, but where I work they put those in the bathroom. Have you ever had to sit and think about some stuff and had the lights all go out on you? It is rather distracting and disconcerting to have to complete your thoughts in the dark. Its not like you can get up and walk around to turn the lights back on again either.

LMAO actually yes I have. It is nice that the smart phone screens are bright. The lights quickly got set to time out at 15min-20min, we joke if you are in longer than that you are hiding.

You said. Nozzle dip huhhuh huhhuh huhuh. Lol sorry couldn't help it.

You guys just described my work haha. Bathroom light switch timers. I've found coffee mugs left around the plant on pumps and tanks. I've got a nice collection right now. Also our supervisors are the worst for gloves break open a new pack to get one pair then put them on stand around while the work is done maybe hold a wrench then toss them....Wtf they aren't even dirty we've got guys that have rips and covered in glycerin who still use their gloves for weeks.

As a department head for 20+ years I've learned that I can place a lot of trust & confidence in the people that work with me in the department. I have to rely on their professionalism and do everything I can to make sure they have the tools & training to get the job done. Instances when I've been disappointed by them have been very few & far between and we've always been able to work things out.

I wish I could say the same about other management in my organization. Seems that for many their goal is to make life miserable for those that report to them. One told me once, "If my guys don't fear for their job every day I'm not doing my job!" Another describes their department staff as "immature children". Maybe I've just been very, very lucky to always have great people in my department. :mug:

We had a Chief like that. He was actually taught to be that way by those who had the job before him. They praised him for his tyranny.

He was lamenting one day about how he couldn't keep a crew. Another Chief said to him, "Gee. You think maybe it's because you're an a-hole?" He learned.

While he's not technically my "boss", I treat him as such - he actually started with the company two and a half years after I did, but he's got an engineering degree while I don't. He's now a licensed engineer, and for the last several years, I've treated him as the "go-between" between him and our actual boss. If him and I can solve a problem without our boss knowing about it, life is better for all parties involved. We're a civil engineering firm, but he came to us from a manufacturing facility, where he was more of a mechanical engineer. Part of the manufacturing mentality is why he's a good boss, the other part is he won't ever let me say I work for him, without correcting me to say I work WITH him. That small difference in attitude -- on the part of the management personnel -- makes an INCREDIBLY huge difference.
