My wife and I are taking an anniversary trip out east the first full week of June. Flying into Boston on Tuesday, then making the drive up to HF on Wednesday. Could someone give us an idea of what to expect in terms of timing? Our plan is to head up after breakfast then catch lunch at Parker Pie before heading over to HF. What is a typical line for growler fills assuming it isn't a crazy limited release day? Is there a time we need to be there by or could we get there around 2 and avoid the early rush? I honestly have no clue how any of this works but I don't want to screw up my only trip to HF. I'm also trying to figure out how long the stop at HF should reasonably take to schedule dinner plans in Waterbury. Thanks for any help/info.

you'll be fine if you show up at 2pm on a Wednesday. 6pm for dinner would be no problem at all as long as you leave by 4:30-5p.

I got there today at like 11:55. By like 12:10 I'd bought bottles, filled growlers, and was hanging out enjoying a beer, watching the snow melt. It was excellent.

Oh, and the bottle of Sue I split with my girlfriend, that too was excellent.

Point is, on just a regular day, their capacity to get people taken care of in a courteous and timely fashion is incredible. I'm sure big release days are a little slower, but I can't imagine it's ever too bad.

we did the same one night.. the roads were so icy we surfed down the big hill... but none of us wanted to try walking back up that hill after dinner and drinks so we called a taxi

Every time I stay there I get bad feelings about the trip home as I slide down the hill. Without fail I manage to run into someone I know who provides a ride back up though. I haven't stayed there in ages, but hoping the trend continues.

Ok, convince me. Why Waterbury? Found a spot I like in Stowe, cuts 15 min off trip time to HF, near good hiking (hopefully weather permitting). Plan to go Hen of the Wood but besides that and Prohibition Pig why Waterbury over Stowe?

I'll add all the B&B's in Waterbury are booked and we are looking for a bit more charm than the Fairfield Inn so we would be staying in a Airbnb in Waterbury anyway and most are 10 min drive to Hen of the Wood. So why not make it 15 min drive from Stowe and be more centrally located around things we are going to do.

yessir! enjoy... honestly, I prefer the food from Doc's over any Waterbury bar...

well, Pro Pig has some good food... but I usually prefer their specials over the regular menu.

the Res has good food, but the Bench is tasty too

looking for some help.....

I'm looking to make my first trip up to HF this weekend. The plan is to hit the brewery on Friday and to camp out and do some fly fishing for the weekend. Ideally we would like to camp right on a stream/lake with some sort of privacy (not in an open field with 20 other tents) where we can keep/eat what we catch. Camp fires and alcohol are a must..... duh. Also looking for a campsite with minimal or no hiking so we can bring coolers and everything else.

Any recommendations other than the three camping sites listed on the HF website?

Drunken stumbling. If I'm planning on drinking heavily it's Waterbury. When the wife comes along it's Stowe. When I'm visiting friends it's Montpelier. Annual summer relaxing with the guys trip is Greensboro. All good options.

It was snowing the night we went, and I drank responsibly, so I drove there and back from the Best Western, which made my very sleepy girlfriend very happy. #noragerts

Also, I just want to announce to the world that last weekend I consumed the Old Stagecoach's huevos rancheros for the first time, and I am forever a changed man. Also, it was maybe the most relaxed, serene breakfast I have ever eaten in my life.

I pay for comfort and things I enjoy... or to avoid things I do not enjoy... splitting a cab for a couple bucks instead of walking up a steep icy hill while intoxicated that I just had to surf down is a no brainer...

Since I'm obviously not a local I'm unaware of any icy hills on Stowe st. past Hen of the Wood. I could see not wanting to walk up it, but the distance is negligible. Also IIRC the sidewalk ends around there too which probably makes it extra sketchy. :shrug:

Yes, in Boston Tues-Thurs and then to VT so I figured going Thursday from Boston to Treehouse then to VT is easier than a round-trip to Treehouse on Wednesday. So I'd be coming from Treehouse to VT guessing I'd come up 91 through Brattleboro, Walpole, Hartford, Montpelier...
