Any Houstonians on the west side - WB Liquors in Katy (Costco liquor) is having their allocated bourbon raffle tomorrow. Membership not required. You put your name in the hat for a chance to buy one of their bottles, the usual suspects should be available. They start taking names at 6, pulling names at 7. Pretty sure the WB Liquors in Humble is also having one same time tomorrow

I went VIP cause I need dem socks...
We even went in on one Super VIP pass to get the shirt.

I hope the double wall insulated cup is badass, cause that **** is gonna live on my desk forever.

My wife's favorite beer. She bought 1.5 cases last year. Worth it.

EDIT: Wow, VIP already sold out. General Admission is prolly gonna be a mess. I'm leaving at 1, lol.

They're selling them at the door for $15 with a pour....

GENERAL ADMISSION No tickets required - doors open from 1pm-7pm.

Ceramic Austin Beerworks Coffee Mug = $5, includes 1 free fill.

Doule-walled Stainless Steel Sputnik Mug = $15 (limited avilability), includes 1 free fill.

If anyone going doesn't want the steel mug, I would gladly buy it from you and give you a beer since I'm out of the state right now. I'd also take a regular mug, but you know, it doesn't hurt to ask

Got an email last night saying they are cancelling their order with the company that makes the steel mugs... also, got refunded my $10 for the steel mug price difference. Seems odd they would have the steel mugs for sale if they made it very clear they are not giving the company their business.

I spoke with an employee at the party (who ordered the mugs). They apparently lied to them and told them they were shipped a number of times ("they'll be there tomorrow!"), but the day before the party when they still hadn't got there they admitted they hadn't even made them yet (behind for the holidays)... so they cancelled.

Flying Saucer Austin is closing on 12/31.

Hey people in SA/Houston/Dallas, next time you decide to go out and think about Flying Saucer, remember this quote:

“The landscape of the restaurant industry is changing rapidly across the nation, and unfortunately, the Texas beer industry was introduced to topsy-turvy legislation, which has harmed our Austin Saucer significantly, as well as hundreds of retailers across the state,” Flying Saucer co-owner Shannon Wynne said in the release.

They're, of course, talking about on-premises sales at local breweries that came with the 2013 legislation....

The Flying Saucer is a craft beer bar against local Texas craft breweries.

Let that sink in for a bit.

Oh this guy. What an ass. I hope they all close:

Wynne also said the ‘topsy-turvy legislation’ he referenced in his earlier statement about the bar’s closure was the 2013 beer law that allowed breweries to sell beer for on-premise consumption. The law has been in effect for a few years now, but retailers are feeling the burn of it more than ever, thanks to a skyrocketing number of breweries in Texas with taprooms offering beers you can only get there.

“Many beers that we helped nurture along the way became our competitors overnight. It’s just not been good for anyone that sells beer but doesn’t brew it,” he said.

So basically they’re upset at local breweries because they aren’t making as much money as when the laws were lopsided in their favor. So now it’s unfair.

Wah wah wah.

Don't paint with that brush. Houston Saucer has not only maintained the best beer program in the city in spite of the upper management but also in spite of a growing contingent of incredible other bars. And still, they maintain as number one. They're not crying, they're thriving. I know that other Saucers aren't as good, depending on location, but it's not fair to lump them all into one basket.

There are better bars in Austin - look at how Brew and Brew has some badass expansion plans. Draughthouse has been around forever and even they are about to make some upgrades by using the second floor.

Saucer just couldn't hang with the competition. Tough break and them going away changes nothing since I never went there anyway.

Honestly curious, what makes the "number one" in Houston? And what exactly is the "best beer program" in the city? I haven't been to FS in a long while so I might not be up to speed.

There are a lot of beer bars in Houston and while FS has a wide array of beers to choose from, I'm not sure I would've categorize them as the best beer bar in the city.

For me it's a combination of factors.
  • Curated but gigantic selection
  • That selection includes a ridiculously deep cellar of amazing vintage/rare bottles
  • Frequently cleaned lines
  • Incredible (also curated) flight program
  • Unique events that highlight the beer
  • Great prices - including on those aforementioned cellar bottles
  • Incredible service - management truly cares about the beer and about customers and that's obvious in every facet
When I'm in town, I make sure I go to the Saucer at least once if not more. For me, anyway, it's no contest. I would be curious as to what you would categorize on top though?

Anyone know if there's a way to see what's currently available at WF Post Oak for drink-in and take away in crowlers?

Nothing I have found. Taphunter bas not been up to date or at all helpful for that location in the past.

Edit: looking at it now the list looks fairly accurate compared to what they had when I stopped through last friday so maybe that has become a more reliable source.
