Speaking of Full Pint, they have a poll on their website for who make the best West Coast IPAs.

https://thefullpint.com/polls/who-makes-the-best-west-coast-style-ipa/

I agree with El Segundo, but I'm surprised to see Wild Barrel so high up - especially since I haven't heard much hubbub about them from you guys. Worth checking out?

From what I've had, they make really good beer. But that poll had to be stuffed big time to get them to 2nd. Someone ran a script or they had a huge fanboi push. Almost tarnishes the poll.

Prince of Dankness is legitimately one of the best IPAs I’ve had in recent memory. (I think it qualifies as a WCIPA?)
Excellent. I will have to be on the lookout for that.

Part of me kind of suspected that too, but I didn't want to speculate. Wouldn't be surprised if they got help from SD Beer Friends or some other FB group.

Every Wild Barrel beer I've had has been good to great. My 2nd highest rated beer when I judged the Sore Eye Cup was their Hipster Latte. Perfectly balanced.

I honestly can't believe that Treevana won that competition. I am still guessing I had a pour from an old keg but I just can't get behind that beer. Now other Burgeon releases have been quite fantastic...just not that one. Ah well, more for everyone else.

Since I really don't think hazy IPA is actually IPA, I'm going to start calling it American Saison. Who's with me?
In my mind, Monkish makes nothing but world-class saisons, so this is all right by me.

I had my first ever pour of Treevana at BLAH I believe, and it blew my mind - singlehandedly put Burgeon on the map for me. But I've also had more recent pours of it that tasted oddly vegetal - the farty vegetal varieties, like brussels sprouts or asparagus.

Not sure what the inconsistency is about, but I can understand.

Had Treevana last weekend and it was tasting good to me. Another more old school meets new school IPA.

Yep! They were talking about it in the league thread. Pretty much inspired me to get off my ass and get my homebrew back up and going.
That kind of grinds my gears, especially since Modern Times advertised it'd be on sale on their social media. I feel like there should always be an addendum that League members get first priority and sales may be subject to change.

Blame Xul the market-mover. He gave Deeds a raving 5-star review and League members immediately started posting "now I'm buying four more bottles" and "let's drive the secondary price up to triple digits," etc. and it sold out within the hour.

It tasted like sunscreen to me so I didn't buy any bottles. I liked Yellow, though, and bought some of that.

Functionally speaking, that is how it works and always has, although I don't know if they've ever explicitly said that anywhere. It was almost never an issue in the past but with three locations open now and more League members able to purchase and pickup beers, it could happen more frequently.

They have said that in a perfect world, League members would buy up all of the special release beers (far more realistic for bottles than the canned IPAs/kettle sours). They generally make an effort to not publically advertise special releases they expect to sell out during the League sale but sometimes demand shoots far beyond their expectations.

Yeah...a lot of people I chatted with at the tasting felt the same way - a couple Theory members even bought more bottles on their phone mid-tasting - but it seems like it amplified considerably once the League sale started.

Fantastic fruit character, I hope people don't sleep on it.

That's fair - it's more a minor personal annoyance than an institutional problem that demands change. I think, like you said, I fell into the expectation of "if they advertise it, they prob won't sell out."

Anyone know the price of those Alesmith two-packs? sdreaper I'm looking at you.

2 X 330ml bottles $27.10 is what is listed online under the member portal. So I assume the same price when purchased in-person.

You have to buy a 2pk because they are still under that law from the ABC that Modern Times was under when they couldn't sell single 12oz cans.

Any insight as to why they went 330 vs 500 or even 375? 330 is quite possibly the dumbest bottle size in existence IMO.

The quick response I got from Peter when I asked a similar question was that a 330mL is more single-serving size of their higher ABV beers. I did not ask why not a 500mL though. I do agree with the response since rarely do I see ppl get more than 2 pours inside A&S for just themselves (which would end up being roughly 12oz so even a 375mL would be a tad bit more than that).

But I still prefer their large format bottles, since taking down a bottle of BASS is not that difficult when you bleed mostly speedway to begin with.

Who really knows if the "single serving" was the actual reason though...it was just what I was told.

Edit: An additional thought...maybe it has something to do with them selling their higher abv beer in the EU.

Thanks.

How's that Modern Times Speedway? Any discernable differences from the OG?

Thanks.

As someone that doesn't drink coffee, unless it is in beer, I would say that it makes speedway a tad more fruity. I would drink it if offered to me, but I did not purchase any additional.

Hmm didn't think about the EU thing, but I imagine a large majority of their sales are here in CA. 330ml bottles basically assures these beers will never see shares again.
