Backyard Rye Bottles at Gramercy Tavern yesterday, not a bad price either.

Hey folks. Leaving for the city tomorrow afternoon, arriving Friday morning (should be a delightful travel day and night, especially with the 5 hour time difference). We'll be staying in Union Square for the weekend before heading to Parsippany > Rye > JFK.

My wife has requested that I solicit a few unorthodox recommendations from my "beer people":

(1) beer (or beerish) place that her parents wouldn't hate (i.e., a place with a cool vibe that my wife and MiL could grab a glass of wine and my FiL and I can get good beer).

(2) a killer bagel spot, preferably one that has breakfast sandwiches. I am going to try to drag her to Yonah Schimmel's for knish (and for sentimentality's sake), but would like to humor her with some good bagels elsewhere if possible.

Appreciate your assistance in advance, and happy holidays!

Given where you're staying, 1 is probably As Is or Haymaker or One Mile House. OMH is my favorite of those three but As Is has the "cooler vibe" and during the day Haymaker is also a pretty good spot (crammed at night). All three have good beer and good cocktails at a minimum, with somewhat decent wines. If you want to travel to Brooklyn, Threes is a slam dunk for the criteria.

2 is probably Russ & Daughters Cafe. But be aware: there's always a long wait. They have the best schmear but not the best bagels but H&H doesn't exist anymore because there's no justice in the universe and god is dead. I used to go to Russ & Daughters main shop (before the cafe existed) and buy schmear to put on my H&H bagels. I don't think as good a bagel exists anywhere anymore. Oh H&H we didn't deserve you but we can't live without you. Anyway some folks also like Ess-A-Bagel and if you want a Bialy instead, Kossars is ok.

yoyo.

a good spot that is bright, chic and very wine friendly is the very poorly named Beerzaar on 6th Ave just south of Houston. they do tapas and the owner knows more about wine than beer. Not very spacious but not tiny and i don't know how busy it gets. Plus it's in a great neighborhood for restaurants, bars and some good nyc strolling.

as far as bagels go, Murray's and Ess-A-Bagels are the classics. Tompkins Sq bagels, Sadelle's Bakery. But if you want a bagel with lox or other smoked fish, go to Russ and Daughters. Not the restaurant. Just the shop.

Thanks guys!!

Shelsky's down in Park Slope seems to be the current hype spot for bagels. Massive lines, sold out early, the inevitable complaining online.

I didn’t know they opened a bagel shop in the slope. I guess it’s different than the original in cobble hill? I feel their sandwiches were not nearly as good as Russ and Daughters.
I should check it out though.

Chiming in on the BagelTalk, Absolute Bagels up on 107th and broadway is still the king. Lines should be pretty manageable (under a 15 minute wait) as Columbia is on break, and broadway dive is right around the corner for a solid tap list alongside one of the best bottle shops in the city.

I have never been to Absolute. One day I’ll get uptown again.
I wouldn’t recommend going to broadway dive with those that are looking for a more trendy destination. The whiskey is good and well priced though.

Agreed Bway Dive is not a trendy place, but it's definitely got a unique feel. I've been going there regularly since I moved into the city back in 2012, and I feel like I notice something new on the walls every time I walk in.

jmgrub if you're looking for a trendy place, As Is is one of the best beer bars in the city and certainly fits the bill, although at night it's pretty dark and can get crowded.

Thanks again to all for the recs. You guys are super helpful.

I actually made it to Broadway Dive on my last trip on the recommendation of someone in this thread - really enjoyed it. Great draft and bottle lists. Was sort of plotting how to get back there on this trip, but while it's the kind of place my father in law would enjoy, I don't think my mother in law would love it.

I’m a Main Street bagels and appetizing in queens guy. If it wasn’t for my orthodox friends I never would have been there but those bagels are otherworldly.

Absolutely better than ess-a-bagel (I didn’t think they were so great, I get better Nyc style bagels in philly)

So I ended up at As-Is tonight by chance. It turns out we are staying in Hell's Kitchen and had dinner at a place called The Harrow 1 block down from As-Is, so we stopped by on our walk home.

Great draft list. Tons of OEC, a few Hill Farmstead IPAs, Hanssens Oude Lambiek and Oudbeitje. Would bang again. Didn't even look at the bottle list, but I assume that is solid as well.

They had an event with B. United the previous night. Did they still have a cask of that Czech pils?
Also, did you slay whales with Fahmie25 ?

I figured as much given all the OEC/Baladin/etc. taps, and told the folks we were with (wife's cousins and one of their wives) that I suspected that was the case. No more cask pils that I saw. Am going to try to make it back late night tonight (if I can sneak away) for a glass of the Domaine Dupont Pommeau. Ultimate winter drink.

Did not see Fahmie25 to my knowledge. Regular? Owner? Employee?

Oh damn! Yeah I was there with a couple people opening a few bottles and drinking large amounts of difference & repetition. It’s a great spot.
