If anyone isn't getting their add'l bottle of Wizard Blend...that would be mighty fine of you.

Didn't make it back in town in time to get to the paahhty. Was really hoping they'd expand to a 7pm session. Does the prefilled growler thing only apply to if you went or is that just a standard part of membership.

Another membership. Cripes.

When you pick up your growlers they will be prefilled. However they will change the prefill from what we received to something else that is available if too much time has passed or those beers are no longer on the board.

So either way, you are walking away with 2 filled growlers.

If that 3L was actually like a 1.5L and capped instead of swing top, I would go in on that in a heartbeat. Those things are basically glorified growlers.

That's definitely what I said too. I thought this was the safe place to critique Modern Times without people getting bent out of shape. And I don't know about this "free" party thing. I remember paying them $400 to get into the league and I don't think they would have let me in yesterday if I hadn't paid them.
Never said you couldn't critique them - I just think it's a lame critique. They didn't have to have an event where you got to bring a friend and drink big pours of bunch of beers. They could have just said, "hey, come pick up your ****." But instead they turned it in to a little party.

I agree with most of your sentiment. But, seeing the precedent they set last year with a plus one and unlimited pours of everything on the list. This year only having two beers out of basically four or five to choose from is a bit of a let down.

The thing you keep missing here is that fact that I said I was letdown compared to last year. If I hadn't gone last year, I probably would have thoughts this was a perfectly fine party. But in comparison, it wasn't anything special.

I do not recall having unlimited pours last year.

Same. I know we got a free pour of Delectable Mountains, and I want to say we got a total of four 4oz pours. It was roughly the same amount of free beer as this year.

Party wasn't super exciting but it was nice to try Batch 1000 again and get a free pour of the Tennessee Monsters Park. Fiesta Carnival and DT w/ Coffee & Coconut were also great, although the coffee was hugely dominant in the latter (at least out of the growler, didn't try it at the party).

Edit: Found last year's email
When you arrive, you and your guest will be checked off the guest list, given your glass (12oz League glass for you, 7oz glass for your guest), your challenge coin, drink tickets for 2 complimentary pours, and your membership card. Hoodies will come at a later date.
So yeah, definitely not unlimited pours and roughly the same amount of beer.

Guess I drank too much last year and forgot I paid anything.

After further review I recall some complaining about how they were handling tabs at the welcome party. They were writing everything on post-its and then having to sort through the stacks of cards to find your cc.

I never got a pour of Batch 1000  they couldn't get any of the kegs to pour so I used my tickets on MP and Symmetric Orchestra.

Yeah, I stood in three different lines before someone finally told me it wasn't pouring correctly. They eventually got some pitchers and managed to sort of pour it if you asked nicely enough. Still foamy as hell even after settling down but it was quite nice. Doesn't drink like a 10% beer.

In response to Brandon Hernandez panning MT's core lineup:

Unfortunately this has everything to do will some bizarre personal grudges he holds against the people who work here, and nothing to do with our beer. There is truly nothing more lame than craft beer drama, but sometimes it seeks you out even if you do nothing to provoke it.

I will say that I think it is plainly inappropriate for a PR rep for a brewery to be writing stories and editorials about other breweries, although I don't think that's at the root of this particular issue. In no other industry would that be allowed by media, but alas, this is beer. I yearn for the day we get the same overall quality of journalism as, say, wine.

lol

I know a lot of people will probably criticize Jacob for that, but **** it - Brandon has maintained the thinly-veiled grudge long enough, no reason for Jacob to keep his mouth shut. Obviously I'm a big fan of Modern Times so I'm not without my biases, but he's dead on about the conflict of interest and abysmal standards for beer journalism.

While he may not be wrong, he's also definitely not the right guy to publicly complain about it - given his obvious biases in the situation. It's very easy to frame his comments as a brewery owner bitching about a negative review, there's plenty of history in the space of that.

There was a bit of growler confusion posed in the league FB. Derek saw it and went hunting for an answer.

"League growler fill policy: 2016 people have until January 31st to fill growlers. 2017 people should not fill growlers until 1/1/17. The League lasts one calendar year, per Jacob. The exception is the fills you get when picking up your stuff for the first time. I hope that clarifies the situation."

So basically the 2016ers get a bit of extra time to get fills still using their growlers.

Do you happen to know if the 2016 ones are fillable at all in 2017 if you're still in the league or with regular beers?

Yes, they turn into regular non-league growlers. So they can be filled with non-league fills (i.e. turn into a regular growler the public would use for beer)

Here's what makes covering beer special:

Breweries shamelessly load up anyone with a wordpress or blogspot site with beer, schwag, access to events. If you are new, you will find there is no way to not give anything less than stellar feedback. The brewers doing the greasing can rarely take bad feedback. I learned early on with TheFullPint that the minute you spit some truth that isn't positive, you get nearly blackballed. Does any other form of journalism work that way? Like if the press throws shade on the Mayor, does City Hall block access? I know that's a wild analogy, but basically, the small/medium brewers control their press the best they can.

So then if you try to cover beer like any other genre like sports, entertainment or consumer products, and attempt to break news with protected anonymous sources, you seemingly break this unique beer wriring code that you are only supposed to get quoted statements from the brewery, only after getting permission from the brewer.

So yeah, covering beer sucks. Brándōn has been called out for years for the conflict of interest, the real sinners are the brewers paying him for the day job and the rags that don't see a problem with it. Jacob should be blasting Societe and all those city publications, not beer writers as a whole.

drinking glimmer void rn. strawberry sours are hard. it's hard to avoid the burnt plastic character you get from most strawberry beers. they totally nailed it here. dark sours aren't my favorite and im a little bummed that half of the club beers are a dark sour but this is really nice. big, jammy strawberry with no off flavors at all. no plastic, not acetic like you get with 90% of dark sours. it's good.
