My standards are low. I dig Detroit spots. Not talking breweries tho.

Oh yeah, I think it's way better in terms of restaurants certainly than it was 6 years ago when I got here. But it's a crying ******* shame there isn't a Homes or Transient or something similar here.

Glad you said that, that's what I was thinking. Really like both of those places and what they are doing.

I've got friends in GR, we go there a lot. Vivant is cool, grey line is solid. That's about it. We usually end up and founders because we love the food. The next day we usually drive to transient and enjoy everything they have and grab food across the street. Seems like everything there just doesn't set itself apart I dunno? I like diff **** apparently ? Speciation is definitely amazing me though.

Yeah I can get on board with this. Beer-wise, pretty much everyone has the same styles of beer. There may be slightly different takes on each style (Pale, IPA, Stout, Wheat, Fruit, Tart, Hazy, etc.) but the selections are relatively the same across the board. The exceptions are Vivant, Speciation, and to some extent, Harmony Hall (which Mitch E. had a hand in).

Regardless of beer, many places try to be unique with their food offerings, good or bad as they might be. City Built just opened north of downtown and went for Puerto Rican cuisine. They're successful so far. A few places have pizza-centric menus. Harmony (not Harmony Hall) is one of them. They're expanding into an adjacent building and are gearing up to offer both pizza and beer delivery in East Grand Rapids.

To me, it appears that the goal for many of these smaller breweries is to be successful at just being the local watering hole. Nothing earth-shattering, just make good beer and have good food. They're not trying to make a name for themselves and stand out among the regional/national scene, just be a staple in their neighborhoods. <----All my opinion

That all makes sense !!!! As long as it works for them! GR has tons to offer!!! I meant nothing bad about GR!

I have been to most big cities in the country and Detroit is worse than Hartford.

Oh I know you meant nothing bad. I can't imagine a Transient or Old Nation in a market like GR. I think places like that need to be in smaller, remote towns so they can draw people into their location.

For anybody interested in an ipa (well, a rye ipa in this case) that actually tastes like the ipas most of us got started on, and not the hazy hype coming out of Old Nation, pick up a bomber of Big Lake Triple-Hopped Ryecoe. Surprisingly good, and as it is a brand new beer that just hit retail ~9 days ago, should be fresh on a shelf near you.
