I've been meaning to post this for awhile. I need to get my **** together and be more active in this thread.
Him just ****** kill him...i dont care if it hurts..yes i do....i want it to...****** kill him, but first....make him cry like a woman...

Bwahahahahaha

Im 39 and no longer require Christmas gifts, nonetheless my family will not give up on both giving and receiving them so I'll use this as an opportunity to bolster my existing vinyl collection (presently standing at 10 pieces of vinyl).

Please offer suggestions in the realm of punk/hardcore/metal/stoner/indie/anything really...especially things where the vinyl experience of the album might be better than (or at least different from) just listening on my phone. Not from a sound quality perspective (I'm not yet an audiophile), but maybe from a "if you chill out in front of a turntable and listen to this, its better than if you were just listening while driving to work" perspective.

Thanks in advance.

****, that's a brutal ask man. I could name you so many things. You have to have some sort of want list based on what you've seen posted here and in the other music threads, don't you?

It's a wise strategy, by the way. I keep my discogs want list updated and last year, I told my wife just to distribute that to anyone who insisted. Worked out pretty well for me...

That does sound like a wise strategy....for next year. This thread reminded me that I actually have a turntable / receiver / speakers, etc still in their boxes from last year. I'm going to have a few beers and set those up now and see what bubbles up in my mind.

Picking off everything that I see posted here is kinda like drinking from a fire-hose.

Find what you like and get it on vinyl. See something in this thread you like? Get it on vinyl. I KNOW you have opinions on music and could probably come up with a long want list just from spending an hour on discogs.

That said, based on your request I'd suggest I Have Fought Against It, But I Can't Any Longer from The Body. Something about sitting down in a nice chair, beer in hand and having speakers surrounding you with this coming out....

Fair enough.

It's a tough question for me to answer because I don't really listen to music any other way to be able to compare vinyl vs <insert other method>. At least not in any meaningful way. Maybe an occasional soundcloud track that gets recommended in a blog or a youtube video recommended in the other music threads.

With that said, I'd probably just recommend a few of my top albums from this year - the new Sleep, Wooden Shjips and Upper Wilds immediately come to mind for your purposes. Timmy's Organism would check a bunch of boxes on your criteria list since he's a bit of all those genres. Ty Segal's side project GOGGS sounds like it might be up your alley too.

Not from this year, but Thee Oh Sees "Help" is one of my favorite records to play loud as **** on vinyl.

I like all of those things and really ******* enjoy Thee Oh Sees Smote Reverser is a monster of an album thats best paid attention to as you described.

Death from Above or gtfo

plus like 39746282 other things. but I’m not near as esoteric as all the peoples in here. so maybe listen to them. or not. you like what you like!

life update: I’ve moved, no timetable on the turntable. probably won’t even get a Christmas tree up this year.

I keep forgetting about this one. Need to go back and revisit. I think I listened to the damn thing like 5 times in one night and then got bombarded with more new releases right away or something. Hope the fact that I've forgotten about it doesn't speak to my true feelings about the record.

Garage jazz prog?

How is that Oak Theory? A buddy hooked me up w a few bottles saying they were pretty unique and that they'd cellar well.

Oak Theory is a stellar beer. Its light, crisp and has the perfect amount of tart to it. I have only had it fresh, as I have issues cellaring beers. Honestly, I have very little self control and just like to drink what I have.

Sleep just put out a deluxe version of Dopesmoker and their new release from this year "The Sciences" which was mentioned by Kbuzz is also really good.

Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats put out a new album this year called Wasteland; I like it, but I like their previous records more than Wasteland. Uncle Acid and the Deadbeats Vol 1 was re-released last year so you should be able to find a copy.

High on Fire "Electric Messiah" is another favorite recent purchase. The first copy I got was ****** up, but the replacement did not have any issues.

https://old.reddit.com/r/VinylDeals/ is a dangerous place, and may cause you to spend way too much money. You can also find some good deals there.

As fate would have it, those were practically the first 3 albums i thought of. Particularly Sleep (which obviously screams "smoke weed and sit down while you listen to this"), and the Uncle Acid (which sounds like it should only be listened to on vinyl).

I'm not yet digging the new Uncle Acid as much as some of the previous releases, but I'm just generally a fan of their whole shtick so I'll take anything.

I would put Aussie band "Orb" in this category as well. Their 2016 record "Birth" is a great record to simulate the Sleep experience. Not quite as metal, but tons of Sabbath fuzz going on. Their two records since then are excellent in their own ways, but are moving the band more into the psych realm as opposed to stoner. But there's a fine line there, obviously.

Ladies and Gentlemen, We Are Floating in Space - Spiritualized

One of my favorite albums ever and the best rock album to come out of England in the 90's. Okay, fine; it can go toe-to-toe with OK Computer. But that's still some high ******* praise.

It's also excellent on vinyl and is great in various mental states.

I'm going to recommend some local music that fits into this theme.

Earthless - everything prior to their latest album is instrumental
Earthless meets Heavy Blanket - the Earthless rhythm section with J Mascis on guitar jamming with Graham Clise of Heavy Blanket for an epic nearly 60 minute jam
Astra - two albums from them, The Weirding and The Black Chord. King Crimson meets Genesis meets Yes meets Hawkwind

Along the fuzzier, riffier sounds, JOY, Petyr, Sacri Monti, and Harsh Toke fit that bill.

One of my all time favorites that works great on vinyl is Kyuss' Welcome To Sky Valley.

Completely forgot to check out the new Earthless, to see how having vocals panned out. I have 2 of their older albums, which I dug but kinda had to be in the mood for. How's the new one?

It's far less jammy and more structured. So different from anything they have done before. Took me awhile to get used to that but I dig the album. I think people who didn't like their longer jams will like it even more than I do.
