Hey all,

Working on a recipe for a dry Irish stout, trying to decide between Irish stout malt or Maris Otter for the base malt.

I use Maris as the base in all my recipes so I'm familiar with it.

Has anyone used stout malt?

How did it turn out?

How would you compare the two?

Thanks!

Never used it but I would think something called Irish Stout Malt would be good for an Irish Stout :) I wonder what the distinction is. Give it a try and let us know how it turns out.

What I've heard/read is that it has a plumper grain kernel, thus more starch, higher diastatic power, and increased efficiency.

I'm a Maris whore, and I've already picked up my ingredients for this batch, but I'll brew it again with the stout malt and keep you posted on how they turn out.
