I really like this beer, but I LOVE Deschuttes Hop in the Dark.

I had this saturday at Stone. They have it on cask with added amarillo and simcoe. Hope aroma/flavor is just out of this world. SWMBO insisted we buy a growler of it.

I had a bomber last night (to my self so it was a good night). It has been awhile since I was blown away like that by a beer I just thought it was excellent. I can't speak much for the style because the only other one i've has is Southern Tier's Inequity, but just looking at it from straight up taste it was just awesome. I had it last night and am even thinking about it now...that doesn't happen much.

I might need a beer to clam down now i'm getting all excited.

Yeah the thread linked above is the best resource available for cloning this beer. My recipe is somewhere in that thread and was nearly identical in flavor to SSR. You have to use a LOT of hops! My only problem was it finished a bit thin (others had the same issue). When i make it again i'll be mashing higher and maybe even adding some maltodextrin or other non-fermentable.

Their double dry hop was wonderful.

I'm from Baker, originally. The Turmoil is awesome, and there's a few other beers there that are pretty tasty too. I try to stop in at Barley's every time I go through town (but the pub doesn't open until 4pm).

I've seen this mentioned a lot and I don't believe it one bit. Have you ever brewed with that yeast? I've done an IPA and an Imperial Stout with it. Both were fermented around 64F and both came out with a lot of esters. Stone's strain is much cleaner (and probably a lot closer to WLP001.)

The guys at stone will tell you that wlp001 is the closest you are going to get to their house strain. They generally seem completely open to talking about recipes and such, so I'm inclined to believe them.

Ooofff...I tried a sample of that smoked porter at Stone earlier this summer. If that is a silver medal, i shudder to think what was bronze and below. It was one of the few beers i simply could not tolerate and finish the small sample they poured for me.

It was foul! I'd take a BMC over that! It may not taste good, but at least it doesn't taste bad!

SSRA, on the other hand is a great Black IPA.

Do you generally like smoked beers? I think the smoked porter is excellent (as are pretty much all of Stone's beers.)
