Steam Rolled Barley?

I think that steam rolled is the same as flaked. The kernels of the grains are hard and would tend to break apart if just rolled so steam is used to soften them. I believe that is true of rolled oats too. If one were to soak the grains in water they also soften but it takes longer than with steam and the grains tend to want to sprout. I have this problem when trying to harvest my grain if it gets rained on and then sits on the ground where it has been run over.
