I use a 2L erlenmeyer flask with homemade stirplate

I've always out the DME at 1:10g in the flask, then added water to the volume needed for the starter.

Last time I added them seperately so I could break up the DME better since it seems to clump more in the flask. I noticed that the final volume is close to 200ml more since the DME is making volume as well (obviously).

My question is this: What's the correct volume of water? Is it a total amount of water and DME (wort) or is it seperate?

yeast growth is more correlated to the amount of DME that you put in the starter and less correlated to the actual volume. As long as you add enough water to have about 1 part DME for 10 parts of water you'll be fine.
