My first time using a carboy for pirmary, so I wonder if this is the start of the Krausen?

Also how active is Hefeweizen Ale (WLP300) likely to be? When should I switch to an airlock?

Flame out last night was aprox 10:00pm and I Pitched at 10:40pm and that picture is 8:06 am.

So nice to have a proper brew thermometer now too, was able to keep the steeping grains right on heat for the whole 50 minutes :ban: .

1. Looks like it to me.
2. Can be extremely active.
3. Switch after the krausen stops coming out the tube or it starts to settle.

[Assumes you are making a Hefe and not an IPA with a Hefe yeast. Wheat does make a difference.]

it's a dunkel wizen, i have 7 lbs of LME in there :) i'll move it downstairs then and keep the blow off on it. The wife would have a fit if i leave it in the tub!

That's a pic about 9 hours later, hmmm, looks like someone didn't make a starter...

Didn't get my yeast early enough to make a starter, atleast it had a chance to sit on the counter for a good 4 hours to warm to room temp from the cooler my LHBS keeps their stock in.

I wanted to try doing a starter with this batch, but definatly doing one next time. I've had good luck pitching the white labs straight out of the bottle before

and the krausen subsided this am, time to put on the airlock? or should i keep the blowoff in place another day? it's bubbl'n through the blowoff about every 20 seconds or so.

From the picture it already looks like you have an airlock on it. Did you switch to a blowoff tube after you took this pic?

yeah after that pic I cleaned it up and put the blowoff back on it. it was pushing foam through the tube yet, and this am no more krausen.

I always keep the blow off on for at least 48 hours, just to make sure everything runs it's course. It becomes pretty clear when it's safe to take it off.

Guess it was delayed a bit as i came home to this tonight... wow is that thing churning in there!:ban:

WOW, was that a 6.5 gallon carboy? Im making up a Heff tonight in a 6.5 gallon pale and am debating if i should put a blow off tube on or not. I've never used one before but seems to be the norm for brewing heffs
