I guess this is a different kind of chumming with spent grains.

Chicken livers on a treble hook (best for Channel Cats)
Live chubs.. big ones (Best for Flat heads)
Denny's Evil Concoctions said:Chumming is illegal here too. But it's got me thinking. I wonder if you put some in a mesh bag if you could use it for crab traps? I'll have to try it. That is if I ever move back to the coast. (Damn I miss fishing on the coast).
BIG +1 on the chicken livers. I let some chicken livers age in the fridge for about two weeks and get real nasty. The channel cats tore it up !Ooompa Loompa said:+1 on the chicken livers. I haven't fished cats in quite some time, but when I did they LOVED chicken livers.
Redweasel said:I've heard of a lot of stange catfish bait but never red jello. What is the deal with that, I'm gettin the fever. I don't know whats worse for me right now fishing or brewing.

cronxitawney said:"real nasty" doesn't do your livers justice. They were turning green, and smelled like rancid a$$. When he pulled a cat from the water, I was dry heaving from the smell of the liver still stuck in the fish's mouth.
EvilTOJ said:I don't see why it wouldn't be illegal if the grain is all stored inside the trap. It'd probably keep together better if the grain was all frozen, then put into the trap. I think next time I go to the coast to go crabbing I'll do the same thing.

Actually it's the feds that regulate BC coastal waters and I know it used to be ok to pour attractant on lures, but actual baiting I believe was illegal.
Freshwater is more strict.
Anyway. Yeah, let me know how the grain bait works for crabs.
avidhomebrewer said:Don't catfish eat just about anything?
Redweasel said:More or less. The really big ones like live bait. Shad or perch. The smaller ones (Two to five pounders) are the scavengers that will eat about anything with a scent. I don't like eating the larger ones as you get more of the "fishy" taste. IMHO two to three pounders are the best. That is not to say that the monsters are not fun as hell to catch.:rockin:

Redweasel said:Is that the old school sponge bait or the dough stuff?

I thought it would be nice to have but for $30 just as easy to build;

the holder is a 1.5" diameter pipe about 9" long with electrical tape to attach to chair
Here is the holder with it installed on the diagonal strut of a standard folding chair;

I usually dump out the trub pile on my garden area....this has got me thinking
And for my favorite fishing rig its got to be a pickerel rig;
