I'm looking for a fellow brewer or brewers in the Mitchell Ontario area who are interested in spliting 55lb bags of specialty grains. I'm going to Gilbertson & Page this week and am planning on buying only Can. 2 row unless I can find someone who's interested in splitting up some Crystal, Munich, Vienna or whatever you grain you are looking for.

I'm interested. Need some 2 row. Would like to share some Munich or Crystal. Let me know what you are interested in. They also have some Hops and they would make me very excited.

Paul

I have price lists for grain from the beginning of July. How can I distribute? I'll try as text.

i picked up a bag of 2 row, a bag of marris otter, and a bag of munich in may, but wouldn't mind getting in on some crystal.

Anybody interested in some pale chocolate? I know Jamil is obsessed with it and because of it I can't really brew anything in Brewing Classic Styles. I'd also be in for some rice hulls, though for $25 I think I'd just get the whole sack.

I'm glad to see the interest in a group purchase. As for my purchase this week I can't do an exchange right away because I'll be on my way to visit some friends.

Bradsul, would it be possible to do the exchange in Kitchener sometime? I'm not in a huge rush for specialty grain, so whenever it works for everyone else. Also, this could be an ideal time to do a bottle exchange.

I would be interested. Just not ready to brew all grain yet... but I need to start my grain inventory soon.

Here a list of base grain I`m thinking of getting. Open for suggestion if you think I`m missing something. (mostly brewing light ale but I`ll do some reds, Browns & stouts).

- cdn 2 row 25kg
- Marris Otter (half bag)
- rice hull 50lb
- Brewers Corn Flakes (half bag)
- Vienna (half bag)
- munich (half bag)

I`m in no rush

I`m in Chatham-Kent... I have some carboys to give if anybody is interested to meet in London. PM let me know.

I'd be in for:

1 bag Canadian 2 Row.
1/2 bag Light Munich
1/4 bag Crystal 110 (does that work for you Brad?)
1/4 bag Vienna

I am in Kitchener, so we could exchange here, but not until after labor day
as I am very busy for the next two weekends.

Could we have skype conference call to set this up? Hard to do on this message board.

Paul

Any thoughts on Hops?

How about everyone who's interested PM me what you'd be interested in (type and quantity). I can compile the list of what needs to be purchased (and who's buying what). Lets say everyone has until August 29th to figure out if they want in and get a PM to me.

I just checked and I think my truck carrying capacity would be about 22 sacks so if we're under that I can handle the pickup and delivery to a common location or two (I'm wondering about Kitchener and Hamilton, they're both on major highways and both within a good range for me to do the drop). Comments?

Also I'll get the mods to change the thread title to something that will maybe draw some more attention.

I like how this idea is coming together
The base 2 row, 1/2 bag Marris Otter and grab bag of specialties interest me.
One specialty that hasn't been mentioned yet is the wheat.
Another would be DME (pretty sure this is not a option)

I probably be interested in an orders similar to Laymeister and bandit77.

I was talking to a co worker today and he mentioned that setting up a paypal account up to receive payment is easy and charge ~4% on the transaction.

One option that would be real cool is a brew day and pickup. I would drive 2 hours for that.

Cheers

I haven't seen DME, but I will get in touch with GP tomorrow. I want to ask about Hops and check prices/availability one more time. I also had an idea about talking to the owner of a Brew-On-Prem place to see if we could get better prices if we tagged our stuff onto his order for a small fee, but it's a long shot.

Another possibility is to use Interac Email. Most Canadian banks let you signup to email money provided you have an Interac capable bank card. Fee is something like you regular transaction fee for sender only. No fee for recipient. Link. I know it works with TD and CIBC. This would avoid PayPal setup and fees.

A brew day would be interesting. Depends on timing. Come October I will have a 80 acre farm with a 1200 sq ft heated Brew Haus and would be happy to host a Brew Day, but it is a little farther - Durham.

Paul

I emailed G&P earlier tonight about price lists as well. I asked for prices for everything they have available to homebrewers, will see what they send me.

The interac email would probably work really well actually, I use it quite a bit and it's really easy.

The Interac option ..never new of that service :mug:
80 acre / 1200 sq ft brew haus..that sounds like brew porn..got pictures :)
3 hour drive for me....sounds tempting

Just my two cents here.... We've got an informal group of Southern Ontario Brewers (the SOBs), you can find us on Facebook - the group page is called "Are you an SOB ?"
We have organized a few group buys before, using a spreadsheet on Google Docs, and payment via CertaPay (email version of Interac).
If you're looking for a few extra buyers for the group, and if one of you is on FB, you may want to consider joining the group, and sending a message to all the members. There are several guys SW of the GTA who might be up for it.
Good Luck!

Prices I posted have been confirmed by Gilbertson and Page.
Will get Hops prices next Wednesday.

Paul

I can give access to people to edit. If you want to be able to, PM me an email address, it's the only way I can grant access (I think it sends you an email, not sure if it needs to be a gmail account or not).

I going to wait...Just to see what`s going to be on the list. Let you know by 27 or 28.

Later

Hey Bradsul,

For crystal I'll take 1/4 of a bag of anything that will work with other people's orders. As for the base malt, I just picked up a bag on Friday since I was passing through Fergus.

When I spoke with the woman who was working there she recommended that we wait until we can get 20 full bags. At that point the price drops significantly ($8-10/bag). Presently we're only at 8 bags so I'll understand if we don't wait but I thought I would pass that info on.

Also, if anyone is interested in getting some biscuit/victory I'd go for a 1/4 of a bag.

brucepepper, thanks for the price break info. I figured it would be up there somewhere. I think the reason we're pretty light right now is I thought more people would be wanting sacks of base grain - I'm guilty of not including any myself since I have almost full sacks of Vienna, Munich II and Maris Otter in stock.

As for delaying the order until we do reach that first price break, myself I'm quite willing to wait until we can get up there, but if we want to go ahead with the order - price be damned - I'm all for that too! :D

As it stands in terms of sacks we can actually order right now we're even less than 8. We only have 4 full sacks allocated (2-Row, MO, Munich). I've updated the spreadsheet link if anyone wants to see the details. Remember we can only purchase when we have a full sack of a certain type allocated.

If anyone knows any brewers not on HBT that want in, be sure to let them know.

i'm willing to wait for the price break, and adjust my order to get to full sacks when the time comes.

I just bought 4 bags at the beginning of July. I am short some 2 row and Munich right now for a couple of batches I need to finish soon. If we wait, I'll probably just pick it up the next time I pass by Fergus. This means my order will go down in time, not up.

We are only at 8 bags right now. We need to get to 16 to make the discount work. It doesn't look like we will get there soon. I would prefer to go ahead with the group buy now instead of waiting.

Paul

LayMeister I imagine that would be true for most of us. We're not likely to hold off brewing to wait for a bulk buy. So this can just be a good opportunity for us to all pick up some specialty grains we can't get elsewhere for a decent price - and of course the opportunity to meet some fellow brewers.

As it stands based on the information I currently have (I think the deadline of the 29th to get your request in should still stand). The problem with going ahead even now is that none of the specialty grains will be purchased* unless we can fill out the requests to full sacks.

Anyway we'll wait until Friday and see how the numbers flush out and we can make a decision as a group at that point.

* with current numbers, those of us wanting crystal 110 could drop to 1/5 of a sack each and remove the need for a second partial sack

I just wanted to say thanks to Brad for organizing this.
Buying base malts in bulk rocks :rockin:

I would like to get a half bag of Munich if anyone left wants to split a bag?
Brad just wondering if your set up to receive payment through interac?

It would be nice leaving the list up after the group buy for a possible future group buy/brewoff down the road.

Another idea I had was like a brew swap only using 1 / 5lb increments of specialty grains - Grain Swap :cross:

Cheers

If you do the interac through your online banking all you need is my email address to send the payment to. You will probably need to setup the service on your account though so check with your bank.

As for the spreadsheet I will leave it online. Google Docs makes it pretty simple and that's also why I put the date in the sheet name. Just in case the TinyURL dies at some point (never used them before) here is the direct link to the spreadsheet.

In the interest of trying to get this purchase to converge, I am fine with 1/5 bag of Crystal 110, 1/5 bag of Vienna and am willing to take 1/4 bag of rice hulls. I have lots of Wheat (Weyermann not Canadian) and Pilsner that are about 6 weeks old. I could provide these for Rod and Bruce Pepper. If we all do the same with Crystal/Vienna, the only stumbling block is Pale Chocolate. If everyone else take 1/5 bag of it, I will to. Someone else will have to step up and take the 1/4 bag of rice hulls.

Paul

I'm willing to take the extra rice hulls if nobody wants them, my brother loves wheats and they last forever anyway.

The crystal idea is a good one, 1/4 back of dark crystal is quite a lot anyway :D If the other guys who want it will chime in with agreement I'll make the adjustments. I'll make the changes to yours and mine LayMeister and we'll see what the others think.

I would be fine in cutting back on the specialty grains to even out the order.
As far as the chocolate goes I would be willing to go 1/5th or I have seen it on click a brew as well.

Cheers
BeerCanuck

...I would be willing to go 1/5th or I have seen it on click a brew as well.
Keep in mind that the stuff I put on there is pale chocolate, not standard chocolate (which is what that clickabrew stuff looks like). Pale chocolate is less roasted and has a lighter colour. I'm mostly after it for experimenting, it won't kill me not to have it so by all means, don't take more than you actually want!

Kind of interested in getting in on the Munich.
If no one new is interested in splitting a extra bag of Munich with me how about the current 1 bag order split 3 ways;
55lb / 3 ~ 18.3 lbs
$50 / 3 ~ $16.66

or
2 bags split 3 ways;
55lb * 2 bags = 110lbs / 3 ~ 36.6 lbs
$50 * 2 bags = $100 / 3 ~ $33.33

just thinking out loud :D

Cheers to the permalink (never seen that before)

I'm good with whatever works for you guys. Either way I'll have enough grain to last me a while. Feel free to divi up the Vienna, Munich, Crystal etc. however it works best.

Bruce

Yes I have been watching this thread. Unfortunately I'm just doing the kits right now. It's in my plans to start gathering equipment for AG but I'm not there yet.

John

i have a full bag and about 1/3 of whole caramunich if someone needs a bit.
i would be willing to take rice hulls.
