So I have a Boston ale clone that I was planning on bottling today, but I needed one more case of bottles for it.

I went to the store and picked up a Leinenkugel fall variety pack (Honey Weiss, Lemon Berry Shandy, Octoberfest, and Red Lager) and I took it to a friends place and "forced" them to drink it with me. We drank, one by one, rinsing them out and throwing the empties back into the case. This morning I was filling up a bucket with Oxyclean to take off those labels, and I realized they were all twist offs.... Needless to say, I feel like an idiot.

I guess my beer will just have to spend 4 weeks in the primary instead of 3. Now I'm off to the store to find something else to drink during the games today...

But in case anyone was interested, the leinenkugel is pretty good. The Shandy is a little too sweet for me though, I think they were just trying to find force another shandy since their summer shandy was such a hit.

I had a similar issues, just not on that large of a scale. I was bottling a English Brown Ale and couldn't figure out for the life of me why the bottle capper kept pushing dents into the caps and was nearly impossible to remove once the cap was seated. Finally I took a closer look and saw the threads in the glass. Big DUH moment. Luckily I had saved extra Sam Adams bottles. Come to think of it, I remember opening those screw cap bottles with an opener. Damn Blue Moon.

So... how did you not notice that while drinking them?

I did the same thing last year with Michelob Amber Bock. One 6'er would be pops, the next would be twists.

Well, not that I'm in a rush to do it, but people claim you can bottle twist-offs.

If you're in need of bottles- see if a local bottle shop does tastings. A shop up the road from me does tastings at least every Saturday, sometimes Sundays too, and by the end of the weekend they've usually got a whole stash of empties they're willing to give away. I've walked out of there with as much as 3 cases of empty bottles before. Could check with local bars, too.

Stop by the local recycling center. I picked up enough bottles for 4 batches in one visit when I first started bottling. I just nuked them in a bath of oxyclean and never had problems.

There you go. Oxyclean, sanitizer, then be extra safe and bake 'em at 350 for 1 hour. Cover the tops with foil, fill the oven, turn it on. Once pre-heated, set for 1 hour, then kill the oven and let the bottles cool. Your bottles are now sterile and will keep as long as the foil is on.

Well we were drinking by a bonfire all night, and just never even thought to give the cap a twist.

For future bottles, my uncle is in a German club and he said he'll just save all the bottles for me after their meetings.

i did get my beer bottled though, grilled meats and football make it easy for a couple guys to go through beers. So my Sunday Funday included a a bucket of oxyclean, then a dishwasher with a soap free rinse and steam, and a bottling session.

(a friend brought the Troegs too, so it was even better)
