I am going to pick up a stir plate for my next piece of equipment. I have seen the homemade ones and they are really cool but I have way too many projects right now. Anyone have a line on a cheap plate that will work well? Ebay has a ton of them but which one to buy?

I don't want to hijack this thread, but when I do starters in my 2L erl. it is very difficult to not throw the 1" stir bar. I start out very slow and gradually increase the speed to create a dimple on the surface. But as the yeast gets active the solution thickens and the surface goes still if I don't increase these the speed some more. This is where I throw the bar. I increase in very small incriments to create another dimple of a vortex but almost always throw the bar. Would a 2" bar make a difference? Thanks,
Chuck

You don't need a vortex, just a motion to the yeast.
