Hi

First of all, I have a perfectly fine 2L Erlenmeyer flask that I have been making yeast starters with - its perfect

Over the holidays a friend gifted me a used 5L jar as she figured I could make better use of it

The jar has been used to pickle food; like pickles, onions, and such. When I got it home it smelled of said pickling/brining and I gave it a good scrub - it smelled like clean glass right after, if you know what i'm talking about

Fast forward a week later - I'm planning on making a 5 Liter starter with the jar and the smell is back; If I clean it it goes away - however it seems to come back after some time

Question is, will this smell, etc impact the yeast starter if I decide to make the starter with it, or should I go back to my 2L starter?

The beer i'm making isn't high alcohol, so it doesn't need a huge starter; I only wanted a ton of yeast to smash through the beer during fermentation

Is it possible to boil it? Could be a persistent bacteria living in there. Clean it well. Boil. Then check again after day or two. Dont forget to clean outside as well.

I'm doing that now, cleaning it with hot water

I'm also going to try baking soda and vinegar as I've read that its meant to be a good cleaner of lingering smells/bacteria

This isn't tempered glass, like the Erlenmeyer flask, so I don't think it could handle boiling water - it might break (however, I won't dump it in ice after - so I reckon its ok to add boiling water to it )

I was planning on brewing tomorrow and make the starter today - waiting for it to de-smell sounds like a pain

It was the plastic lid it came with, I tossed it out; the jar is fine

I'll wrap the jar with plastic wrap or foil while its on the stir plate - its all good :)

Thanks
