Haven't posted in this forum in a little bit, so here it goes. I want to brew an extract SMaSH recipe with Galaxy hops. Here is what I'm thinking:

6.6 Maris Otter LME or Briess Golden Light LME
2 oz Galaxy
Safale US-05

30 minute boil
Extract and .5 oz at 30
.5 oz at 5
1 oz at flameout

Anyone critiquing will help greatly!

It's a smash, but unless that's an 1 gallon recipe, you will not get much of the Galaxy aroma and flavour from 1.5 oz hops. ( the 0.5 oz does not count, as it will impart 0 aroma and flavour ). That ressembles a Blonde Ale at best. Dry hopping is also something you want to do when trying to determine what kind of flavours a particular hop cand and will impart in beer.

If it's a 5-6 gallons recipe, then you need a bit more hops. I would start with 5 oz in the whirlpool and another 3-5 oz in the dry hop.

The yeast is fine, albeit boring, medium flocculator and takes a bit longer to clear. I like Nottingham because it's much faster and clears out very well. ( better flocculation and sedimentation than US-05 )

Cheers!

You must be a hop-head! I'm not, and really enjoy beers with 1 to 2oz of late hops, and no dry hopping. The hop flavour and aroma is noticeable and pleasant, without being in-your-face. It all depends what the OP is looking for - I like the recipe as is (should be easy drinking and refreshing). It certainly won't be an IPA.

I'm not really a hop-head. I stopped brewing IPAs ( my signature shows my next brews, which I am actually starting to brew from today ), although I enjoy them once in a while, it's definitely not a style I want to brew. But I do make ESBs/Golden/Pale Ales without dry hopping and usually try to load a bit more hops during whirlpool. This adds lots of flavour and aroma, without being too much / overbearing. I also become to dislike too much bitterness, which is why most of my beers have somewhere between 20 and 45 IBUs.

OPs recipe is fine as it is, and will surely make beer. I just feel that with a hop like Galaxy, you might want a bit more punch. :)

I did something similar:. 1 oz a 60, 1 oz at flameout, then 2 d.h at 1 week. Not quite hoppy enough for my taste but still tasty, especially if you like the lower side of hops.
