What I did for beer today

Today I cleaned four spent kegs that were ready for cleaning using hot PBW and my recirculating bucket pump system that I made several years ago. Then I sanitized two of them and kegged my Altbier!

Got my 1318 reproduction line going full tilt boogie this morning aiming to crank out enough cells for 20 gallons of 55 point hazies plus overbuild for the next cycle.

Safe and sane kitchen take-over: boil water on stove, set pot in sink, stir in four drops of Fermcap then add the DME. No chance of stove-top catastrophe. Spousal Unit is pleased.

Dueling 5L e-flasks ftw!

While that percolates, I dumped my Star San reservoir, cleaned the bucket, then set my RO system controller to put 5.5 gallons back in to make a fresh batch.

Done in plenty of time before the FB games start.

Dry hopped my English IPA. 70g of Olicana and 50g of Harlequin.

I vacuum sealed 4 ounces of fresh dried Nugget hops. 7 half ounce bags and 2 quarter ounce bags. I don't know the alpha acid number but judging from prior years harvest I'm guessing they around 10 aa or higher. The first few times I brewed with them I was adding a full ounce for bittering per 5 gallons of beer. I learned to cut that in half else it was too bitter on the finish.

Got the buckeye hydro RO system installed - first did the system flush on the pre-filters for 10 minutes, put in the RO membrane, followed by 3 gallons of permeate (clean RO water) which I dumped before use on beer day. Installed a dual TDS meters on the incoming and outgoing water lines.

Incoming (tap water) - 55 ppm
Clean Permeate - 3-4 ppm

Very smooth install, quite easy actually in my case since I am just running waste to the ground outside and input water is via a brass female hose fitting.

Excited to check it out on a brew day - coming shortly. I think I am going to make another Irish Red next.

Tried to keg my British IPA but for some reason (no idea how or why) I managed to rouse all of the hops to the top after about 5L and they clogged both my floating dip tube and white Bounce filter.

I'll try again in a couple of hours when stuff has settled. Pretty sure it's CO2 dissolved in the hop sludge releasing as the pressure in my All Rounder drops and pushing them all to the top.

Also, my MJ keg that has just come off my kegerator (was holding Saison) is covered in rust inside. That's suboptimal.

Round 2 ran a bit smoother and I managed to get a full keg out. Tasting very decent even warm and flat.

Got my starter started; once it's cooled down I'll pitch the WLP530 and get 'er on the stir plate.

I brewed a big beer today (~1.100 OG). Last week I made a 3 gallon starter that yielded a ton of yeast. Today I did a cell count to determine how many viable cells per ml in my starter in order to calculate how much to pitch. I was drinking a homebrew Belgian Blond while counting. Hopefully I it didn't affect my count.

Got the Christmas TreeT Belgian going. I didn't get near the boil-off I expected, so instead of finishing with 5 gallons, I'm sitting at just over 6. This led to lower than expected OG of 1.064, which will bring down my FG by a few points (and by extension, my ABV will be around 7 instead of 9%).

The Sabro smells great, though, and I've been waiting for the trub to settle some before tasting the hydrometer sample.

I work in a Steelworks, you have more screens than some of our control rooms haha. Is that a version of Citect?

At this moment. I don't use Citec SCADA products. All my hardware is based on the Automation Direct platform and the C-more EA7-EA9 series touch screen HMI.

Boy, am I glad I put a blow-off tube on the Christmas TreeT! The fermenter's been spewing kreusen for the last 3 hours into my 2 liter Erlenmeyer flask half-filled with a water/StarSan mix.

The family was repulsed by the sulfur being thrown off earlier today, so they opened up the utility room door and vented with a box fan. I was out all morning, but by the time I got home, it was mostly done burping up sewer gas and now is busy pumping out foam. Temps are hanging between 68 and 70 depending on how recently I take the cold shock bag out of the freezer.

Combined two half-assed grainmills into one fully-functional. Now I can grind the 4.5 lbs MO, 1/4 barley and 1/4 carafa that's been sitting around for weeks; now I can brew next weekend.
Inventoried yeast and hops to the same end, after a fashion.

Loading the Brewzilla 100L with RO water for tomorrow's brew day - an Irish Red Ale, called ROZ'S Red Rocket, V2. It's my 2nd go round on this recipe. Very tasty and has the beautiful color I was looking for. Currently at 1 gallon... About 3 1/2 hours to go to reach my volume of 14.7 g for and 11 gal batch (fermenter) ... (No sparge).

Watching the Brewer's game while it fills. Hard work but somebody's gotta do it.

Getting ready for the lead-off batch of back-to-back brew days, this one a session version of my Fantastic Haze clone. This will be the first brew day since the big stout I brewed back on May 18, and there's been a wee bit of rust to knock off, but so far so good

First step was decanting the two 4+ liter second stage starters into a half dozen mason jars.

The yield looked pretty good in the flasks, definitely sufficient to cover the 20 gallons of ~55 point wort I'll be pitching to, plus a pair of jars to bank in the fridge for the next go 'round.

Next first step was to get two of my ferm fridges set up with sanitized carboys and "krausen catchers" so I can send pure fermentation gas out to a pair of kegs.

Next task was milling all the grains for the next two days. Along with my regular barley mill I used my wheat mill with my 20v DeWalt for Tuesday's recipe, a session version of the HBT Treehouse Julius clone. The grist for both batches ended up in a pair of gamma-lidded buckets and will sit on the cool floor overnight, shouldn't be any measurable impact on character.

Last tasks were measuring out all the salts 'n' stuff for tomorrow's batch, programming my RO system to fill the rig with 16.5 gallons of liquor, setting up my old 2-channel bbq temperature monitor so I can keep an eye on the BK and HLT from my office as they heat up their halves of the brewing liquor, and sanitizing a pair of kegs to be purged by fermentation gas.

I'll portion out the hops once the mash is cooking, so I should be good to go in the morning.

Made 3 gallons of delicious 1.103 chocolate soup wort, chilled it, and poured it on top of the full yeast cake from a pale ale that I bottled while the wort was chilling. The kitchen smells like freshly baked brownies!

After cleaning everything I staged it all again for tomorrow's brew day and have my RO system filling the rig again...

Me too - brewed today and hit gravity and pH numbers on the nose. Took me 3 batches using the Brewzilla 100L to tweak my BrewFather settings to match my previous actual results. (Lowered boil off number , heck no, it ain't 3 gallons. And also Brewhouse effiency lowered to match reality of no sparge - down from mid 70s to low 70s) .

Anyway.... Me too. Spot on. Gorgeous looking/tasting wort for my Christmas batch of Irish Red Ale.
