I contributed two mixed four-packs of beer to the silent auction for a not-for-profit organization's event. They decided to auction them off together and, holy moly, the winning bid was $80! I like my beer, its good, but its not $10/bottle good! I know, they were supporting the organization, etc., but wow, I hope they like it! I talked with them for a while after the event, and gave them a link to our website with info about the beers. This morning, I got an email that they tried the WPA Wheat Pale Ale and they raved about it. Whew.

I also contributed a brew day - I've cut and pasted the auction sheet below. I fudged upwards the costs of the ingredients for the beers - to help the organization justify a higher starting bid price. The winning bid for this was $100. Again, wow! I better hope their beer turns out well!

I had no expectations that people would pay $80 for 8 bottles of beer or $100 to brew with me. I'm still stunned.

Here's to low expectations! :mug:

One Beer Brewing Session
From Grain to Bottle!

Brew your own batch of organic beer, starting with raw ingredients! This session may be scheduled at our home brewery in Oak Lawn or at your home – we will provide all the equipment needed.

If you’d like to make this into a party, we can do it for a group – or you and a friend can bid on this item together and share the brewing session. We’ll serve as your guides as you make a batch of top-quality, organic, hand-made beer!

We’ll help you select a style of beer – you can use one of our recipes or we’ll build a new one for you. All the ingredients needed will be provided – a value that ranges from $25 to $50 depending upon the type of beer. The session will last around 4 hours and approximately 6 weeks later, you will have two cases of beer you made by hand!

I have exceedingly low expectations from my homebrew, too. Maybe that's a good thing?

Anyway, that's awesome. I'm glad your charity was able to make some $$$$ off of your homebrew!

Oh I forgot the best part! So, they sold 2 four-packs of my beer for $80 and at the end of the event, were selling cases of Corona and Miller Lite for $10!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Bite me, BMC!

Auctioning a homebrew session is a great idea.

I agree. Great idea.

Two cases of craft brew can easily cost $50-$75 anyway. Good deal for them and you might get them into homebrewing.

This idea could easily be expanded....get homebrew stores to donate the ingredients and local hombrewers donate time and equipment. You could have a real great fundraiser on your hands.

This. +1. I think that's a great idea. Even if its a homebrew club that donated it all, it would be great for the community and teach people at the same time. And its for a good cause on top of it.

I seriously think you hit on a great idea. And if it catches on, people will start seeking you out for a charitable cause.

I actually had this idea for a for-profit business. A brew rig on a mobile trailer, you pay us to come to your place and provide the ingredients and equipment, we leave you with 5, 10, 15 or 20 gallons of wort and enough yeast to inoculate it. Requires no liquor license since there is no alcohol at the time of sale.

Surely someone else has thought of marketing a home delivery of premade wort and yeast?

Are you familiar with the brew-on-premise businesses? Used to have one here in Chicago (first time I ever brewed) - its not a delivery or mobile thing, you go to the brewery and brew a batch, with their ingredients, recipe, equipment, and help.

I have seen those before, though I can't imagine them to be all that profitable or self sustaining. Though I guess it could work in a big city with a sizable young, craft beer drinking population.

Kudos on your beer auctioning. That's really cool!

Put technically those are selling alcohol since you take away a finished product.

I was talking about a wort/yeast home delivery service.

Where I am, that isn't considered selling alcohol, as the purchaser has to pitch the yeast. I have talked to a few people working in these stores, and the amount of involvement seems to vary by location, with some having the purchaser involved all the way through, and others where they just pitch.

I do like the idea of a mobile unit, I doubt it could be commercially viable where I am, due to population spread, but it would sure be fun. It would be great to take to the local craft beer and bbq show.

If you make a mobile unit, you need a Dickie Dee bicycle to pour the beer from.

I action off homebrew every CHristmas for my work silent auction. It is always one of the big hits. Last year the six packs were going for $12-25. Pretty good and people like it.

I think this is a great way to promote the hobby and give a little to charity.

Love the idea of auctioning off a brew session...I would have to practice a spiel on someone while I was brewing before I felt comfortable doing it for money though!
