Hey all,

I wanted to start my oatmeal stout today, but everything got backed up and I just cant do it tonight because its getting too late. I crushed a pound each of roasted barley and chocolate malt and those were my grains I was going to use. Im not sure how long they last after they are crushed before they have to be used. Does anyone know if they will be good to use tomorrow? So basically overnight? Im thinking i may have to go back out to the store and crush 2 more pounds of grain tomorrow, its only like 5 bucks but it saves a trip if i dont have to.

Thanks for the help

Probably 6 months or so.

Really? Someone told me that they were pretty much bad after a couple of days if not used when crushed......not saying youre wrong, just surprised to hear it.

With extract kits with steeping grains, they are crushed(I think) and they ship them to you. I'd imagine they last at least a few months based on that.

Keep them sealed up, cool and dry and they will last for at least a few weeks. Beyond that you will want to take a taste to see if they are stale at all, if so discard and buy new ones.

They arent from an extract kit, I crushed them myself at a Friar Tuck's into a brown bag, so they arent sealed or anything special. Thats why im unsure as to how long it would last.

You could transfer them to a zip top bag and squeeze the air out, then throw them in the fridge; they'll keep for a few weeks like that.

They will last a good while if kept cool and dry. I've used pre-crushed stuff up to 6 weeks later and it's worked out fine.

I have my grains crushed at my LHBS and i've gone up to 6 months before brewing with them.... They work just fine... Keep 'em dry and cool.... The LHBS owner told me if they still smell when you open the bad they're still good to use. If there's no wet muck in the bottom of the bag you're in the clear.
