I'm brewing my second ever brew right now and as I was just made redundant from my job as bar manager of a brewery bar decided to 'borrow' hops from the store to play with at home.... as I was receiving no pay out this seemed morally acceptable after much deliberation with beer at home lol

Anyhow I diverse!! I now have started a home brew of an English style bitter and hopped it up without the use of a hop bag. It was as I added finings today I got to thinking and well thought 'bugger I forgot the sediment reducer'

I have no secondary ferment or so racking is not an option to help me here... should I just bottle it and hope for the best? Or will I end up with bottles of hop sludge... I have around 48 hours before I'm desperate so any ideas will be great.

Hmmmmm ...if I understand you correctly (it's a stretch, that is a difficult post to read, my man...), you're worried about sediment and only primary fermentation??? Not a problem, just let it ferment to completion and clear on it's own, and rack off to bottle above the sediment now covering the bottom of the fermenter......I only secondary a beer if it's a "big" beer, and all my meads, Most beer is fine only in primary and everything will settle out given time - don't rush it

How cold is it outside where you are? I would consider sitting the fermentor outside for a few days if possible and just let all the stuff sink to the bottom naturally.

I live in Australia mrhadak and so the 30oC days won't be too helpful I do have a spare fridge i can pop it into.

And thank you fuelish as poor as my post is to read you understood my problem. And confirmed what I was already thinking.

Use your hydrometer to make sure your fermentation is complete before cold crashing. If fermentation is not complete it will start up again in the bottles. This can lead to very excessive pressures and pop goes the bottle.

I just leave my beers in primary for at least 2 weeks, usually 3. By then the sediment is packed tightly on the bottom of the fermenter and the beer is clear. I have never done a cold crash. I don't feel the need to mess with the beer.

I've found that coldcrashing is the most effective way to clear up the beer. Nowadays i always coldcrash for several days and rack my beer into a large fine filter bag in the bottling bucket (see below). Might help if your sediment isn't dropping much.

Your filtering technique at bottling time sounds interesting(I followed the link). I'll have to give it a try next time I bottle. I'm part Scottish and try to suck up every last little bit of beery goodness, so unless I secondary, I always get sediment in the bottling bucket and sometimes in the bottles.
Innovation- gotta love it!

I have on many occasions forgot to add the Irish moss, all the brews did clear ok. Cold crash as described above does the trick.
On reading your post, I am concerned that you may be hurrying things !
Don't move the bear on till it's ready !!
