My wife hates beer. She's tried just about every type of beer I've ever bought, but she just doesn't like it. The only exception was a strawberry blonde beer I bought in a specialty store a few years ago. I don't remember the brand, but, we haven't seen it since. Now,every time i see a strawberry beer I pick up a six pack and hope for the best. The beer had a very pronounced strawberry flavor, almost more like a flavored malt drink.
So, this brings me to my question. If I bought ingredients for a lightly flavored beer, like an IPA, and when I pour into the fermenter, add a cheesecloth bag of a few pounds of strawberries, would that give much flavor to the beer? Or am I going about this wrong? This would be my second batch ever, and don't want to run before I can walk. Any help would be very much appreciated!

MIld, Mild, Mild There's another thread on this that's active, but get the ingredients for a Mild and add the strawberries. It will work.

Wheat beers are a common base for fruit beers. Make an american wheat ale, lightly hopped, and then add a few pounds of pureed fruit to the secondary. Make a recipe similar to this:

6 lb. Wheat LME

1 oz of bittering hops for 60 min (palmer aka. howtobrew.com uses Liberty @ 4% AA in his american wheat)

American Ale yeast - White Labs 001, Wyeast 1056, or something else fairly clean.

Ferment for about a week, then transfer to secondary and add up to about 5 lbs of fruit. Sugars in the fruit will cause it to begin an active fermentation again.

Thanks to everyone. I only said IPA because the ones I've tried had a rather mild flavor. Guess I've got another brewday coming up this weekend. Thanks again
